Hi

I'm in the middle of changing the battery on my car and the new one is a Lucas. Having opened it there is a sticker saying please remove plug. However I haven't had to do this on any battery before in my motoring career and am a little hesitant.

Also each side of the battery seems identical and has a plug at the other end but there is no sticker for that side.

Maybe a bit of a silly question but I don't want to cock it up.

So do I remove each plug or one or neither?

Pics to follow shortly.

Many thanks

Joe

They are the breather plugs. Batteries produce gas when being charged and it has to vent somewhere otherwise the battery would explode. Possibly. Remove them both.

It says plug, not plugs?

We can only see half the battery. ETA I see there is only one label. Just remove the single plug.

Typically you only unplug the vent on one side...there should be some form of vent pipe that you attach?

Sorry the image was too big for the upload tool so had to download to PC and resize.

Each end seems the same with a plug under the tape which is peeled back in the first photo showing the green plug.

It does indeed say remove plug with the s crossed out but each end seems the same.

Maybe I shouldn't question what it says and just do it at one end? It just seems odd given I've never had to do anything like it before and then having two seemingly identical plugs but being told to remove just the one.

Basically cars have different battery set ups so they have a vent on each side to accommodate..for example, if the car battery goes in the boot compartment you can sometimes have a pipe which vents the gas externally...sometimes the pipe is on the left and on other cars on the right.

Check if you can see anything on the old battery / battery compartment...if nothing there just unplug the side marked by an arrow and insert ( i guess)

Eta: just checked your car....this might help..http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1782446-Battery-vent-thing

Thanks Steve - I have neglected to update my garage but will do so tonight it's an X308 XJ sovereign 2001 4L.

The old battery on closer inspection had a small elbow into one vent hole at the same end as the new one - the +ve end.

So what I have done is put the old elbow vent pipe onto the new one as it didn't come with one anywhere and have only unplugged on side so it matches the configuration of the old.

Quite what use an elbow will do in the boot aside from direct gas down instead of straight out horizontally I have no idea but that's how it was for good or bad.

And to boot I found the radio code without turning the house upside down so its wash and Hoover time before she goes in for service and MoT tomorrow.

Cheers all piston heads has delivered again. smile

Just look at how your existing battery is fitted, and remove one plug so that you can fit the breather pipe adaptor.

Fitted a battery the other day that had a warning about removing plugs yet was unable to find one...bit worrying!
