Sorry if this has been asked before, but as the title says -
What is stopping somebody buying two of the same car - i.e. make, model and colour, getting some plates made up and effectively cloning their own car?
One lot of insurance, one MOT, yet allows the use of two vehicles on the road.
ANPR wouldn't be set off (assuming one keeps one car insured etc)and so effectively the second car is on the road free...
Am I missing something?

I kind of assumed you would be theoretically using them at opposite ends of the country, using them at the same address would probably mean that someone notices and alerts the authorities, unless you keep them out of site and just drive out in one or other. I am sure someone will have done it somewhere.
If the dodgy one is ever stolen - you'd be knackered (if/) when the police recovered it.
If ever the data becomes available, I bet somebody could pick up on cloned cars very quickly doing a database search on reg-number v location where locations are more than xx miles apart in under yy mins.

I wondered about this when I was flying from Gatwick to Plymouth to work down there during the week.
I didn't really need a car down there, but as I had a £200 shed to get me to the station at this end, I could have bought another, asked DVLA for a duplicate tax disc for the one I "lost", change the plates on the 'new' one & SORN it, they'd have always been 300 miles apart, it's not likely that anyone would notice.
Only becomes a problem if the clone is in an accident, but the likelyhood is that it would just get taken to the scapper.

Nope, just automatically issue two tickets, one for each offence. At best, you'd get a knock on the door asking to look at your car, as it appears to have been in two places at once.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
