Is there a way to find out which car a particular number plate was issued to originally, and then a subsequent list of cars it has been on?

A couple of years ago I bought the registration mark 'WLL 2S', and have checked the DVLA previous auctions/sold prices site and it bears no results...

http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/search/prev...

...so the number must have been assigned to a car. I'd be interested to find out what kind of car it was, and how long it was on that car before being retained and sold.

Anyone know if there's a simple way of doing this (perhaps HPI check on the number plate?), or would I have to write a friendly letter/email to the DVLA?

I would say that it was on a Chrysler from new, most likely a Sunbeam. Registered in October 1977.

Is that a guess or is it based on facts/local knowledge?

It's based on information publicly available, if you just apply a bit of lateral thinking. (A bit of knowledge/experience comes in handy, too.)

WLL 3S, WLL 4S, WLL 5S and WLL 6S were all Chrysler Sunbeams, all registered 12.10.77. Later numbers were Chryslers of different sorts. That tells us that this block of registration numbers was allocated to a Chrysler dealer, presumably in North West London. In addition, I know that the Sunbeam model was launched in October 1977, and with the four cars listed being 1.0, 1.0, 1.3, 1.3 in white, blue, white, blue, one might imagine that 1S and 2S were also Sunbeams, perhaps 1.6s in white and blue. Possibly dealer demonstrator cars, or even perhaps bought by a hire company or another business.

Excellent, thanks very much for the explanation. All your logic seems sound with regards to the assumption on 1S and 2S. How do you know that WLL 3S, WLL 4S, WLL 5S and WLL 6S were Chrysler Sunbeams? (Just curious more than anything!)

Appreciate you taking the time to give me all that info.

Cheers!

I use cartell.ie to identify cars from registrations. There are other sites that can do the same but I find that one easiest. DVLA can then be used to provide some other details.
Just so happens that I know a thing or two about Sunbeams, which is rather spooky.

Glad to help.

There are tables available which show how the older registrations used to be issued. Lots of information on this link, including the tables,
