What's wrong with a 2wd XC90?
Discussion
Was the question posed by my brother in law when I tried to talk him out buying of a ten year old, 150k example. I was telling him they have an all too common tendency for the 4wd system to fail, which can result in a new gearbox being needed, and when I mentioned how many people didn't realise it was borked until it snowed he came up with a flaw in my argument.
I do have to admit he has a point. They don't care if it isn't 4wd and his missus is resisting suggestions of an estate or MPV so it wouldn't matter if it was buggered, so long as the long term consequences weren't a complete transmission failure.

i have no knowledge of this transmission at all, but would be very surprised if you can run it with this fault long term without running into problems, but if you can and the fault is very common it would probably make them a good buy for a cheap car, no dealer would be able to sell them broken so they'd either have to auction them off super cheap or pay what is probably a small fortune to get them fixed
It's rare the gearbox needs replacing, the splined shaft that goes into the diff wears smooth, our local Volvo specialist repairs them for approx £300. I'm a trade buyer and for me they are off my list, terrible cars, on average they always need at least 4 figures spending on them - stereo units, handbrakes, abs units, injectors etc - awful cars, don't know why people buy them, the early 165 models are so underpowered aswell.

Any idea how to test the 4wd?

There's nothing wrong with a 2wd XC90, but if your brother in law has absolutely no use for what is going to amount to roughly a tonne of extra structure and driveline then he really should consider why he is intending to spend so much money on it.

Unfortunately his missus is style conscious so expense/Bork potential/pointlessness arguments are falling on deaf ears.
I had one like that until out of exasperation, I point blank refused to pay for anymore repairs and told her she had to deal with them.Unfortunately his missus is style conscious so expense/Bork potential/pointlessness arguments are falling on deaf ears.
Her attitude to cars changed overnight.

He says he doesn't have time to look etc, so I asked if he had time to fix it... I suspect he's even more stubborn than his sister.

Same here. I was losing patience with a troublesome Lexus RX300. Her attitude to cars changed overnight.
Even without having to pick up any of the bork invoices, on her third fill up she announced she would like to have a car which did better than 13mpg around the houses....
Less than a year in and the first big bill's arrived (theyve had some smaller ones that i haven't really paid attention to - steering rack IIRC). Some investigation to find an oil leak has found the rear main seal has gone, as well as a leak from the turbo and a split intercooler. £1400 and that's before they've worked out what the clunk from the suspension is.
