mx5 vs motorbike
Discussion
If you've never ridden a bike, is it safe to assume you haven't got any bike wear either? Getting all of the kit from scratch can cost a couple of hundred pounds which you'd need to factor into your budget.
Also, what kind of use do you need from a vehicle? While the bike will in all likelyhood be cheaper to run, it will require more regular attention than the average car, and won't be as practical. Bikes are very fun and involving, so best advice is to try it and see if you like.

well i would use the mx5 for roof down fun, and back end sliding in the wet. the bike i just want pure pleasure from. work is only 6 miles away so commuting is a big factor, and the money from selling my fiat will be used on bike gear
. also do you recommend any 125's? if you do hahaha

I haven't had much experience of 125s (have only ridden an old Honda CG125, a few Honda CBF125s, and some sort of Peugeot scooter thing), but the Hondas were much of a muchness. Acceleration from 0-40 is fairly good, and the light weight means the bikes are very chuckable and easy to ride. Plenty of fun to be had ragging them to the red line in every gear without worrying about troubling the speed limit
You're best off asking in the Biker Banter sub forum for more advice for more opionions about which 125s are best. Have a look at the Get On campaign, which offers free taster sessions of riding so you can get an idea if it's for you. Personally, I love it.

WHats your budget?
If you have £2.5k go for a Yamaha YZFR125. Try a couple of Aprilias as well.
If you've got under £1500, I recommend a Honda CBF125, maybe a CBR125 if they are cheap enough but really what you need t do is get out on some and get a feel for them, as what one person may find comfortable to ride, you may not

You wont save much by going on bike. You need factor in new bike clothes & helmets & winter clothes & gloves. and have you seen the prices of bikes?, a good mx5 can be had for a ropey bikes.
Bike clothing needn't cost the earth for decent mid range kit. £200-£300 can quite easily get you all the gear you need. As for bike prices, they don't depreciate. Pay £1500 for a bike today, take care of it, and it'll sell for the same amount in 2 years time

And 125s are capable of bloody good MPG too.

How much would the bike cost ? An MX-5 can be had for £500, won't be misery in the rain, and is a great place for having sex. Try that on a bike.
I've got both an MX5 and a bike. The MX5 is more fun in the wet. The MX5 was cheaper to buy, the bike is cheaper to run.
There is more room on a bike for that sort of thing, but neither is as good as a bus stop.
Motor bikes are dangerous and a poor means of transport. you need to wear loads of expensive kit to proect you and whenever you get somewhere, you then have to work out what to do with it all.
Generally they need more maintenance and care than a car.
And yet I have 3 motorbikes and no mx5........
