Evening guys,

Would like to get a quick sanity check before handing over £120 to a Nissan dealer.

Booked X-trail in for a warranty repair at the dealer last weekend

Video here of problem, high pitched chirping/squealing noise when first turning the car on, gets louder the more electrics I turn on, foglights, heated seats, aircon, radio, electric windows etc...

Although after 20 minutes of driving, it then idles pretty quietly.

Nissan said nothing was wrong with it, and the noise was in fact "diesel knock" they sent me away with this bulletin...

I returned after filming the noise and shown the mechanic, he was adamant its diesel knock, but said they would replace the drive belts for £120, and this might fix it.

All seems a bit of a gamble at the moment, can anyone identify the problem?

Sounds like an idler or other pulley. Try a squirt of WD and see how long it goes away for.

Quick test, spray a small amount of WD40 at the belt. If it stops the noise then you have your answer.

Sounds like FEAD belt squeal to me, changes due to the load on the belt and the spike loads through it due to cylinder firing events. Stops as the belt warms and becomes more "sticky".

Could be a poorly aligned belt, or weakened tensioner spring or damper. Or just a worn out belt.

Either way, it shouldn't make that noise. Not the end of the world but to shrug it off as Diesel Knock is not correct imho.
