TVR Chimaera vs Jaguar XJR (X308) - what to get and why?
Discussion
My head is full of the ideas of a sporty(ish) V8 for mixed driving, long motorway hauls to see the girlfriend down south, the odd continental trip (mainly motorways, the odd commute (34 mile round trip) to work and something a little more civilised than my VW T4 van or Mk1 MX5.
So which of the two would you go for, I realise the XJR is cheaper and has a spare two doors But it's a car that appeals to me. I think it would be comfier than the TVR, and I've always the MX5 for back road blasts...

I am an xjr owner and long to have a tvr, however I love my jaaaaaagg to much to let it go.
I only went a got some fuel earlier and they are a hoot to drive.
Can't wait to take it down to santa pod from scotland next month, supercharged v8 and 3 fellow petrol heads, gonna be a cracking weekend.

XJR circa 3-4 k
TVR circa 8-10k
buy the jag and use the change for super unleaded. i got 3 of them in different guises and like you have an MX5 in the garage for b road blasts. i took the 6cyl s/c to the South of France last year, Calais to St Tropez in 9 hours, superb, near silent continent cruiser.
i do love Chim and would have one at the drop of a hat but only as a second or third car.
keep us posted on your desision

I've got both. XJR is a great car, but it would be the TVR for me given the choice. Though I'm not sure I'd want to be commuting in it these days - getting to old for that, my clutch knee is too buggered and I'm far too used to wafty autos - but I have done in the past both in the Chim and a Tuscan.
I have both at the moment, a chim 500 and an xjr with the pulley mod. The jag is about 400 bhp and the chim about 290. I use the jaguar more than the chim which I save, usually for drivings sake. The chim seems so much quicker than the jag but I don't think it is.
I think you can sum up the difference like this. If you just want to make reasonably discreet rapid progress from a - b in comfort then get the jag, it's exciting and there aren't many cars to touch it, when you get to your destination you will get out reasonably refreshed and still quite tidy. If however you want to go somewhere where you are heard before you arrive and people watch as you go by saying kin hell what was that, it sounded fantastic. Then get the chim, always a drama and a sense of occasion. When you arrive you will probably hot, sweaty, knackered but with a great big grin on your face :-)
Get them both, you low it makes sense

Surely what you need is the jag and TVR, that way you have the sports car and the tourer covered.
I almost ended up with an xk8 to partner my TVR but bought a BMW 840 instead.
Why have just one v8 when you can have 2!
Edited to add: completely agreed with the poster above running both. Have a tool for a job, not a jack of all trades, master of none.

I had an 850 BMW for 6 years and I loved it. I used to go mountain biking every night. Then I bought the chim and I think I only drove the 850 once more. I stopped biking and put on 2 stone I just couldn't wait to go out in the tvr!!!
Then I bought an xjr, I liked them so much I bought 2 more. In between I tried a 350z, a boxster 3.2 s a Subaru impreza wrc and a cerbera. I didn't keep any of those long, but I love the chim and the jag , both great looking and sounding v8s. Both I consider keepers, for the moment :-)
