Ran a HPI check on a potential new purchase; the car is with a (non franchise) dealer and on a private, dateless plate. The details (private reg -> specifics of car) all match up, but one thing puzzles me: it's a 2004 car but the HPI says:

"Date of first registration in the UK: March 2011"

What the?!

This date ties in with the date on which the (only) previous owner ditched the original reg (which I have a note of) and put on their own private plate - does this sound legit? I would have thought the date of UK registration would have been 2004; what are the possible explanations for a 6 year gap in registration? Car sold overseas? But the car has a 04 UK reg plate tied to it in its history and was sold by BMW Park Lane. It is RHD and seems to be UK spec.

I'm going back to look through the history, logbook, v5 etc in greater detail tomorrow so will be extra vigilant, but any advice is welcome! Apart from that detail, the HPI says all else is clear.

HPI data isn't infallible I don't think

Sounds like a simple mistake - try ringing them to see what they say.

BMW Park Lane deal with military and diplomatic export sales so it could be that the car was supplied by them and immediately exported.
