Is this a new thing or have I just not really noticed before and why 40 mph. Its like they are controlled by something, something that makes them all drive at 40 mph. I can't understand it. My MPG thingy tells me thar 56 mph is way more economical than 40. So why 40! WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Oh and why do they do it on slip roads? Why not speed up to 70 on the slip roads. Why wait till you hit the motorway.

I really can't fathom it and its driving me to insanity at the heady speed of 40 mph.

Actaully, do they explode if they go any other speed like that bus movie called... the bus that could not slow down or something as they drive at, yes you've guessed it 40MPH in 30 zones.

WHY? PLEASE GOD WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHY?

So not 55mph, or 57mph, but 56mph?

Well thats what it says in the hand book. Never tried other speeds as I am always stuck behind people doing 40. I shall find old disused runway and get back to you with a wider sample of speeds.

I caught up with a heavily laden HGV at that speed on a NSL A road.

I just had this sixth sense that he was going to stick at that speed come-what-may, so didn't overtake him. A short while later we enter a village 30mph zone with cars parked both sides, pedestrian crossing, side roads etc and sure enough he just bowls along at 40mph all the way through. I agree it is weird.

The 40mph this is a well observed phenomenon. Slightly annoying on an A road but like you say on a slip road it can be bordering on dangerous.

To be fair, he was sticking to the speed limit on one of those occasions. It does seem to be endemic amongst car drivers around here too though.

IMX it's usually 43-45 they stick to, sometimes slowing down to about 30 round corners most of us would go round at 40+
And yes, I've observed that they appear to do the same speed through villages etc.
Surprised at the HGV maintaining 40 on the NSL & in the 30 - normally the 40mph HGV brigade are the ones with trackers (supermarkets, tankers), I thought they tended to stick to the limit religiously, regardless of what it was.

No this was a dirty great dumper truck full of earth, so presumably just monitored by the chap at the steering wheel.

Not wanting to be ageist, but definately notice when overtaking the "40mph brigade" that they are of retirement age.

Definately find that when overtaking them in a NSL area, they catch you up again as you drive through 30mph areas.

Cars are too easy to drive now, people just get up to 40 and cruise along to their destination without ever changing their speed, regardless of the posted limit.

Of late I've noticed this "40",about five years ago I also noticed "45", but with traffic getting heavier older folk tend to drive slower.
Myself I love the wafting speed 50-60, you get somewhere quickly and safely.

I wonder as I get older will I be traveling at 40 in a few years.

I find 40mph gets far better mpgz than any other speed. Up to 10 mpgz differance between 40 and 50mph

Same in Kent and Sussex. Just have to drive something with enough oomph to overtake numerous people and make good use of even short straights wink

My theory is that its the slowest speed you can go in top gear, for many cars, without shaking the car to pieces. It's 42 MPH,and there seems to be even more hypermiling pensioners on the roads than ever before.I just wish they'd just GET OUT OF MY FERKIN WAY!!!!.

I find that I'm stuck in a queue of 40mph cars every day on my commute along NSL roads now. But there is a village with 30 zone, and they just continue through at 40 and I get a queue behind me when I'm doing 30 as all the 40mph traffic ahead pulls away from me...

People are morons.

40mph is a universal speed, appropriate under all conditions. Whether it be motorway, A roads, through villages or residential areas and past schools, you simply can't go wrong with 40mph. Lots of other drivers wave and flash their lights to show they agree.
