944 S2 increasing in value?
Discussion
My guess is that prices have stabilised for 944s, and will not rise much for the next couple of years (excluding very special/low mileage ones). On the other hand, if the classic bubble bursts, I reckon they'll take a bit of a fall, but not as much as, say, an E30 M3. Why?
- Quite a lot were built, and they were build bloody well, so are still fairly plentiful
- Some parts are horrendously expensive as a proportion of the value of the car; I remember the rear screen being nearly 1k to replace about 5 years ago. Why invest 1k in replacing cracked glass on a car that is only worth 2 or 3k? Much better to let the water drip in and leave it for somebody else to worry about.....
- They really aren't that fast any more; 2 grand of Integra would leave one for dead (apart from the turbo)
- They don't have a glamourous image - a bit 'poor man's Porsche'. None of my friends reminisce about the time they met this really hot chick, but scored with her slightly doggy mate. Same applies to classics; 2nd tier cars don't get the same following.
Don't get me wrong, they are lovely cars, but they just don't seem to have the following that an appreciating classic needs.

Or the corroded cills that seem to invite the rust more than 924s?How many years of rust and race track attrition rates will see their numbers approach those of Nissan Bluebirds on the estinction watch list?
Ones that Garlick has owned increase in value slightly.

Less power (195 for the type R versus 210 for the S2 16v), similar weight (1117kgs versus 1310) and fwd vs rwd, how does that work? Comparable performance would seem fairer than left for dead.Strawman said:

200kg makes quite a difference on track, probably less so on your average B road blast:http://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/honda_integra_t...
The expensive 944's are the low mileage examples (sub 100k miles). The very low mileage examples of the S2 and Turbo Cabriolet's (ie under 70k miles) seem to be demanding more than £10K. But only becuase of that really low mileage - If you bought one of those low milers and used it - it would lose a load of value.
A vice nice condition S2 Cabriolet with some slightly higher miles can be bought for £5k-£6.5k. Dad got his for around that price (although it had 'higher' mileage it had just been restored).

I just bought a 944 S2 in Guards red, I looked at the Boxster aswell as they were a bit cheaper, but the driving experience in the 944 is just awesome and blew the Boxster away when it came to driving involvement, I have wanted one since I was 3 years old and as the saying goes 'never meet your heros', I was worried that the car wasn't going to be that good.........but christ, it is better than I could ever have expected, when I sold my MX5 a couple of years back, I doubted that another car would ever be as good in the 'fun factor' department, well, the 944 has it aswell!
Mine is at 105,000 now after getting back from a trip through France and what would I sell it for? I wouldn't take less the £7k for it, it's rust free and immaculate inside and out(even though it's the linen leather interior). I don't intend on letting go of it though.
Oh and the Integra Type R comment, put some fresh suspension on the 944 and the Integra wouldn't have a hope in hells chance of keeping up, If you left on 24 year old suspension, they are about the same, the 944 S2 would have it in a straight line though(p.s. I have had a B18 Teg Type R so have a good understanding of them).

You cant compare a type R to a 944 S2, the Integra is a decent car, not going to knock it but the S2 has a 3.0 engine versus a 2 litre one, much more drivability, when you are felling lazy it will lope along on a decent torque but will still do a decent lunge for the redline. 944 buyers generally dont consider a Type R, they have a certain appeal but not eveyone likes the Type R thing and some people cant face an old Porsche.
I paid £4250 for my S2 cab, not sure prices have risen, there are a lot of extremely ambitious ads but what they actually change hands for will be different. They might be going up as people cotton on to how good they are and the prices beign asked for some really rather porr examples of 911, again, not going to slag 911s but there are some really mankly looking automatic targas in heinous colours being advertised at 20k, a 5 grand 944 looks like conspiciously good value Pork and really, eighties 3.2 Carreras with which the S2 competes with perhaps were not much more powerful at 200 to 231 bhp. I was looking at the 944 price list from 1989 someone posted on PCGB and really there wasnt that much in it price wise between an S2/Turbo and a 911, there was some crossover which surprised me, I always thougth there was a Boxster/911 like gulf in prices.
The Boxster question is perplexing, the early ones are getting to be classics in their own right now but there are ten times more Boxsters about than 944's, 30,000 versus about 3,000 according to howmanyleft, so there is much more choice with regards to Boxsters, and therefore competition, still a nice car but not a talking point like a 944. there are about 750 S2's still about and 390 S2 Cabs, that is a tiny number realtive to the amount of dicussion they generate on there. Scarcity does do a lot for prices, look at 968 prices versus 944 S2 prices, the updates cant be that much of the price difference as they arent nigth and day different to drive.
