Cunning - confuse the MLMs into keeping one lane further left ?

It's already in operation on the M42 and M6....and it's a nightmare.

The amount of people that ignore the red X when there is an obstruction is unbelievable. There's nowhere for emergency services to operate and when there is an RTC, we are basically screwed. It's a cheap alternative to doing the job properly.

Interesting, I use the M42 a lot at rush hour and when the red X is lit I have never seen anyone drive down the hard shoulder.

I can see how the problem occurs when all 4 lanes are full and there is an RTC, in m,y experience low and medium, speed RTC's are pretty common on the variable speed part of the M42, but there are fewer than there were before the variable.

Thing is, currently around a quarter of our motorway network is set aside to hard shoulder and in the main not used, it makes sense to use technology to make this work.

They'll fk it up though if they do it and, as I said at the top, it's in AE so it'll be bks

I work on that stretch every day. There are HUNDREDS that do it. (We tried to count once and had to give up). There are also plenty of RTCs. It just means they are now in a more precarious place then they once were. The theory might be sound, the practice is far from it.

I think they need to improve the quality of the road surfaces on the H/S first!

When I drive on them as directed during road works, it's like going on a lunar expedition!

This. M25 southern stretch to M26 is just a joke.

Proper lane discipline and teaching people to stop using their brakes when there is no need to would resolve most traffic congestion issues. Not sure how to educate people though.

In Oz they have 5 lane roads with with no central reservation, 3 lanes open going toward the city in the morning rush hour and then 3 coming out of the city in the evening rush hour. Only thing that stops the carnage is a red x above the lanes not being used if you are going against the rush hour traffic.

Fair enough - legislating against muppets is never easy, but making it easier for them to be muppets is madness

They do it on the A38 Aston Expressway into/out of Birmingham city centre, I think?

What's the problem? I've used the M6 many times and the system seems to work.

They do, and I recall a short stretch of something similar in Lincoln I think.

Wouldn't work at motorway speeds though; an out-of-control vehicle flying over into oncoming traffic doing 70 would be carnage.

Short stretch in Cardiff too, with two lanes in and one out in the morning and then reverses, two out and one in in the afternoon to aid the rush hour traffic.
