I am looking at an S5 and will be going along for a test drive this weekend at my local Audi dealership. I always have liked the S5 look.

What are peoples opinions of the S5, anyone driven one or better, own one?
Any issues to look out for?

Any alternatives?

Thanks
N

I've had my S5 for 6 months now with zero issues...and I like it smile....

...my only gripe is the MPG is pretty poor given the modest 350'ish BHP.

But it handles well, looks great and is pretty much bullet proof.

I find the S5 works equally well on the M5, M50, M62, M42, M69 etc, personally I think the op should try it on a wider selection of roads than just the M3

Spec can be a bit funny on the S5, some of them are missing basic essentials on a car of this calibre like Nav and cruise control. Take this into account when comparing prices/ negotiating.

Also the S5 comes in both 4.2 V8 FSI and 3.0 V6 TFSI guises if you weren't already aware, but I guess you'll be looking at the former.

I have a E92 M3 & it's a cracking allrounder but I love the S5 too it has a superior interior & a nicer sounding V8 aswell either motor will put a smile on your face.

I found this too...plenty of very low spec cars around. You will notice that they linger on the classifieds for some time...a problem that could be yours too when it comes to selling up/PX.

B&O and Nav are imo the basic must haves when thinking later down the road...plus the B&O is very, very good.

E92, and because it's a very complete car, and I don't particularly rate the S5, which seems very bland.

I know the M3 is meant to be better but the A5/S5 is such a looker, I am no Audi Fanboy but I do like the look of them, especially in Misano Red.

And that, right there, is what puts me off Audis and their ilk,

Nice big growly V8 = Check
Looks good = Check
Comfy interior = Check

Posh Speakers and a fancy TomTom in the dash = Nope

Do buyers turn into electronic toy fiends at this level, Audi have this nailed on, marketing genius, it seems to me about twenty percent seems to be actual functionality, 40 percent ego and 40 percent resale paranoia.

I am sure it comes with some form of acceptable speakers and just buy a TomTom or use your phone, I know that the shame will drive some Audiphiles to suicide but you could tell everyone yours is the Club Sport.

If you are smooth fuel economy can be more than acceptable. I did 30.3 *average* Aberdeen > London last week (over 540 miles) and wasn't hanging around. Cruise at .79 leptons and exercising it out of junctions and roundabouts.

Interior is leaps and bounds better than the equivalent BMW or Mercedes and Audi's V8 makes a wonderful noise (just too damn quiet with the standard exhaust).

Ive driven one, the 3.0tfsi. I have very mixed feelings on them.

Bloody quick. But I hated the steering. And the gearbox in either of the auto modes (fine in manual). And my boss at the time, (who's car it was) was getting 12 (!) mpg tank to tank..

Just didnt...get me going in anyway, I actually prefered the feel of mine to drive, which is a shed money st box by comparison.

Launch control with the DSG is hillarious though...

S5 = Nice engine(s) in a somewhat bland car, good in a straight line and on the motorway but not much in the way of driving pleasure overall. Very non-PH view here.. but I'd almost rather have a diseasal version, the S5 isn't worth the poor MPG in my view.

M3 = The complete package and great fun.
