So following on from the recent video on Autocar (http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-video/video-mercedes-a45-amg-vs-golf-gti-vs-bmw-m135i) thought I'd post a poll to see which of these is the most popular on PH.
Golf GTI runs in as the cheapest starting from £25,845 and seems to be a good all-rounder on paper. 210PS or 220PS with the performance pack from its 2.0 TFSI engine delivered through the front wheels. Choice of Manual or DSG. 0-62mph is achieved in either 6.5 or 6.4 secs depending on model.

BMW's M135i starts from £30,555 and is the only with a 3.0 I6 engine, giving it 320bhp delivered through the rear wheels. Gearbox is either a Manual or 8-speed Auto. Very talented car and a bargain for the price, but will cost more to run than the others. 0-62 mph is either 4.9 or 5.1 secs depending on model.

The Merc A45 AMG is the priciest at £37,845 but by far and away the most powerful with 355bhp. Impressively this is through a 4-cylinder 2.0 turbo and delivered through all 4-wheels. Offered only with a seven-speed twin-clutch auto box. Can't argue with its speed and 4.6sec 0-62mph time.

Audi's S3 hasn't reached UK shores yet but could potentially offer the best from all models. Prices recently confirmed at starting from £30,640. Same engine as the Golf but retuned to 300PS. Choice of Manual or DSG and all models are 4WD Quattro. 0-62mph runs in at either 4.8secs or 5.2 secs

So, historically the BMW has been the most popular but now 3 new models are on the block in relatively quick succession. Which and why?

More to run than the 4WD AMG, I doubt it.yonex said:

Based on the paper figures for CO2 and MPG the BMW is the worst, probably due to the 1 litre difference in engine capacity Johnnytheboy said:
The Golf's completely outclassed here, surely.
In some ways yes, but if you want a quick german hatchback each of these is currently their respective manufacturers flagship

So the AMG was comfortably ahead as it would be in real life.
As a 5dr M135 owner i am not particularly surprised at result as it stands. The AMG is certainly more attractive nicer to look at and it is astonishingly quick but the pricing is a little lumpy for this class of vehicle and the dog wouldnt be comfortable in the boot.
Edited to fit result

Most popular for what?Owning?
Talking about?
Wanting?
Hating?
Making fun of?
Comparing to?
Most popular, i.e. which one people want the most. Obviously.
Well done for posting Va10, I was going to put a link to the vid too. Ignore the moaners!
Interesting vid I think, & I'm not sure they're all comparable, the Golf's much cheaper if you take a manual 3 door (even with PP), the BM's 7k cheaper than the Merc.
I had a good look round a 3 dr M135i in that lovely light ish blue (colour name?) they do, and I'm sorry to say it really isn't a looker is it! Obvious I know, but I'm just not sure I could buy it based on that. Though I appreciate all rave about it & it's seemingly a bargain. The Merc doesn't look much either! Can't anyone make a decent looking car these days?!
The Golf's the sensible option, and looks pretty good in pics (not seen one in the flesh as yet), plus of course 47mpg looks good - but it's of course the default, safe & dull choice & life's too short..........

Perhaps I should add the Merc looks less expensive when you've added 5-doors and an Auto 'box to the others, prices quoted in original post are for 3dr manual cars which obviously isn't possible with the A45 AMG.
I just ordered an M135i. Out of interest I checked the price of the equivalent spec AMG A45. Without discount the Merc would be more than £10'000 more than I am paying for the BMW. Assuming a similar level of discount (do Merc UK do discounts?) then difference would still be £7'000 ish i.e. Merc is 22% more expensive. That is a sizeable difference. That being said I quite like the look of the Merc (although to be fair neither BMW nor Merc are that attractive).
Probably a mute point as the car is predominantly for my wife and she is a big BMW fan so would have been an uphill task to persuade her to take the Merc even if it were the same price.
