My Dream Drive: Marlow to Bicester

A return to the home counties for another slice of classic English B-road

Name: Mark Lawton
Where: Marlow to Bicester, Bucks
Car used: Porsche 981 Boxster S

The route:
"It's 32 miles travelling from the bottom to near the top of Buckinghamshire and into Oxfordshire, traversing the Chilterns en route."

Convertible optional, fun guaranteed
Convertible optional, fun guaranteed
Why it's a dream drive:
"It's enormously varied, taking in some tight and twisty B-roads, with fast A-roads and large changes in elevation, surface and surroundings - through some of the most fantastic English countryside. Best done in a convertible, on a summer morning, obviously with the roof down!

"Google Maps says it'll take you 59 minutes, although 'a friend' has done it in quite a bit less than that without any traffic as much of it is well-sighted. The challenge being to carry speed smoothly through the corners and remember to slow down for the few speed restricted areas. I've lived in the area for years and it's a challenging route for both car and driver so no matter whether you have a Clio 172 or a 911 GT3, you can enjoy the run."

Highlights and lowlights:
"There's a fantastic right-hand curve over a bridge before a tightening, twisting left just before you get into Stokenchurch. Even better is the right-left-right-left undulating and complex section just after leaving Long Crendon when the countryside really opens out with great sightlines. It's properly fun with no traffic, even better with a few other petrolheads that wish to indulge in a little 'safety fast'.

"Until you get past Long Crendon, it can be a busy road, so timing is critical - early mornings are best but late evenings, just before the sun sets, can be equally special. It's rural, so you do have the countryside hazards of tractors, horses and bumbling locals to contend with. Plenty of bikers know this route and can add to the challenge as they'll normally be much more cautious under braking or round corners, but faster on the straights (unless you have something fast yourself)."

It's not always like this, so plan ahead

Sights, stop-offs and diversions:
"Marlow is on the River Thames and so provides fabulous places to eat and drink or watch the world go by! Stokenchurch is adjacent to 'Christmas Common' - very popular with walkers and cyclists (one of the largest managed forests in the south of England). Thame is an old-fashioned market town (try the Swan Hotel for food and drink, but there are numerous options) and Bicester is a 'newly expanded' town with a huge retail complex, but Carluccios in Bicester Village does a great breakfast (Coliazione Magnifica) with coffee and juice or alternatively you can just take the other half shopping ..."

the linked route is wrong... it is showing the route to Silverstone, not the Marlow to Bicester (via the Stokenchuch hill climb in reverse...) route of the story.

Apologies, our Acme Map-o-Matic didn't generate the right embed code. We'll give it a boot and update it with the correct one. Bear with us!

A lot of the roads mentioned are in desperate need of resurfacing (along with the rest of the UK, right). Once upon a time it was a fabulous stretch, and was part of my commute to work.

Nice write up but I guess that this route will soon become famous for mobile speed camera vans and cars with blue lights parked in lay-bys! cop

Glad to see another route fairly local to me to try out - but I'm reasonably sure Bicester is in Oxfordshire, not Bucks. Bicester's roads used to regularly grind to a halt around the shopping village, especially at weekends. It was a misery living there, as everyone parked in the Tesco car park when the other one was full (which was all the time), so if you just wanted food you had no chance. No idea what it's like since the developments but I hope it's improved.

I live near Long Crendon, so I know this route well.
Just watch out for Deer who like to [literally] jump over the hedges and smash into your car. It happens a lot!
This is what happend to my Celica...

Right, apologies for that but the correct map (and county names) have now been added.

Cheers,

If you are going to do this, then go from Marlow along the Henley road (carefully - it's lethal), when you get to Henley go right and onto the Fairmile, then right again and go up to Stokenchurch via the insanely good road up through Stonor and Pishill. Turn right at the top through Christmas Common and onto the old A40 there.

The old road from Long Crendon to Bicester is a gem.

I also love this route, and was a favourite when living near Uxbridge.

Only thing you fail to mention is the speed bumps on the way into Long Crendon; nearly took the front off a GT3 on one of those.

This root runs past my house (between Marlow and Stokenchurch) as has been posted, if doing this in the early hours, watch out for the wildlife!

It is not a bad route, but it is speed restricted at the bister end and yes the boys in blue do turn up to check, speed bumps in long crendon and has a few villages on route + speed camera van often in the area as you come close to J7 of theM40.

If you live in Bicter may I suggest taking the old B road back to Cherwell valley but continue to Ahnyo then deciding ton and on to chipping norton. From here to burford and then cirencester. When reaching Cirencester either turn around and come back or on to lechlade and then burford if you like a loop. Lots of pubs on route so food is not an issue.
