Mrs is due to drop baby meggysaurus in a few weeks and need something more family orientated than a crappy megane which is near dead. Doesn't matter about budget because I'll be doing it on finance. I learnt to drive in a jazz and found it a really good car to be in, it was practical, spacious, robust. However I do feel I may have overlooked a car that could be better than this, any suggestions?
My mother, sister, grandfather all have a jazz and had them in the past of varying ages as they think that highly of them. They're used to carry 2-3 dogs, whole families etc around the shocking roads up here and they're just brilliant. 02, 04, 08 and 13 plate altogether and i can seriously say not one problem.

Jazz... niiiice.But on a more serious note my sister in law is on her second and really likes them due to their practicality. She does however get some stick for driving a pensioner's car.
My missus has one. She loves it, and I don't mind it. It's a nippy wee thing with a decent robust interior. It drives well, has a roomy interior (clever folding rear seats help) and has been 100% reliable.
I wish we'd got one with a sunroof mind...........looking around loads have 'em.

I've heard a lot of good things about their practicality, lot of nice touches..
left field choice but the meriva's with the opposing doors might be handy for getting the little one in and out without having a large door to open? - I'd stick with a petrol though!
Golfs are supposedly another good, simply do it car like the jazz, but you'd be paying VAG tax on it...and personally I'm not convinced they are any better than their competitors like the Focus / Astra...

Despite their awful image, the Honda Jazz is always well spoken of. IIRC, it actually has a bit of a following in Australasia and Japan, where it's popular with young lads who modify them. I certainly think, given the size of the Civic now, that Honda should treat the Jazz as the new hot model, give it a bit of a re-brand and do a Type R model. There is a black Jazz Si in my village that I always turn my head to look at when I walk past. With a proper exhaust (delete the pea shooter) and some lowering, it could look pretty good. All it needs then is some beefy brakes, a screaming N/A engine and it's good to go!

OH has a Jazz and, whilst not very PH, I have a grudging respect for it. Very practical, never goes wrong although a little pricey to service. Boot not huge for baby gear with the seats up but fold half the rear seat and you'll get anythng you need in. Plastics feel cheap but suspect it will last forever and never let you down which is my definition of a quality car.
ETA I agree it's slow and noisy at motorway speeds (ours is the old model, not sure if the latest is more refined). Honda dealers have a good rep and our local one has been top notch.

Agree with this totally, if Honda did a Jazz Type-R, I'd be breaking into the dealership overnight!Like this one, just darker...
Back on topic, I can't think of any better car then the Jazz in your circumstances, a Renault Modus deserves a mention, but I'd till go for the Jazz.

Small car that's able to get 3 men and 3 bikes without using all the space.
Massive boot and loads of space in the back.
Reliable reputation.
Runs to the redline and chassis tested on track. Handles well on the limit albeit at the expense of comfort.
Second generation more comfortable and quiet.

Ah, the A2. They were truly excellent, ground breaking cars. But I wouldn't own one now they are out of warranty because they are, in my experience, too unreliable, too expensive to repair and Audi service is abysmal. . Just to name a few alternatives if you want to have a look around, perhaps Seat Ibiza ST, Skoda Yeti, Fiat 500L, Dacia Duster. But the Jazz ain't bad at all IMO.We had one just as it was leaving warranty and it was in the garage regularly. When the warranty expired, Audi refused point blank to perform even recalls without payment. There was a problem with the ARB as I recall and it cost us about £650, when it should have been done by Audi FOC because it was a design fault and they were doing many of them FOC. They refused on the basis that we had serviced the car outside the network.
So, the A2, great car when new, not so good as it aged and manufactured by a shonky company. YMMV of course.
A few years I looked at getting a Honda Jazz for my wife, the alternative we identified was the Nissan Note. Ended up with a Note as it seemed to have a bit more rear space and we got a much better deal. Either car would have been fine.

I bought the wife one a couple of weeks ago, its the Sport model on a 07 reg, brilliant car, I can't praise it enough, the sport one isn't any faster than standard but looks a lot better and is really chuckable, people say they wouldn't drive one because of their image, that's your loss, I prefer driving it than my 330 BMW, it also has a flappy paddle 7 speed gearbox, I bought it off a realitive, it had been stood a year but I can't fault it, if your buying a mk1 Jazz just Chevy the back brakes as they are underused and prone to calipers seizeing, if you get a CVT one don't leave it in drive when waiting at traffic lights etc, as it has a wet clutch, brilliant car though I can't praise it enough.
