Usb / head unit functionality

Can anyone help?

Just installed an Alpine ICS-X7 mechless media centre - nice piece of kit but the way it interfaces with the usb stick is awful. Folders all over the place, files missing, only five album titles displayed under search - and this is a double din unit! Why oh why can't Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood etc sell a unit that works well with a usb drive and windows folder structure? Surely they can't all be as inconvenient as this...can they??

Any ideas?

I've found that quite often you need to restructure your files in the way that works best with the headunit.

Most head units just seem to read the straightforward directory structure when browsing music off of USB stick or SD card (i.e. They don't scan the mp3 tags and make their own database for browsing) therefore it makes sense to have your music structured in a logical form.

I have mine in the form:

/<Artist name>/<Album title>/<track ##>-<track name>

This is how I rip it on my hard drive where I keep the master copy and I just copy off to memory cards/sticks/phones as needed, keeping the same structure.

It's dead easy to browse on a head unit or simple digital device, even with basic rudimentary browsers. Using two numerals for the track number ensures that it's sorted properly when browsing.
