Hey guys, I have a few business trips next week and was hoping to avoid the tyne tunnel as ill be going at peak time.

I need to go to north tyneside hospital and wansbeck, ill be going from stockton, is there a route thats not too much longer where i can avoid the tunnel?? Google maps only shows me routes with tolls.

i would pay the £1.60 each way, the only other option is the A1 and drop back to N. tyneside

Ditto.. Since the new tunnel was opened I've never seen a queue at either end. You can go round but it will add 10 minutes when there's no traffic and half an hour at rush hour.. The Tyne Bridge is gridlock most of the time. You'd also use a stack more fuel than it'll cost you in tolls.

You can get a pre paid electronic pass that makes it a fair bit cheaper.

Also. There's a month of roadworks starting on the A1 which is going to be a nightmare.. Only ever one lane open south, and contraflow going north. It'll be backed right up.

No jams at the tunnel since the 2nd one was open. Apply for a permit and it costs £1.44 each way.

Your other choices are through the centre of Newcastle or round by the Metro Centre on the western bypass, neither of which sound viable to me unless you have a couple of hours to spare.

Hang on - does the ferry still run from North Shields <-> South Shields? Get a push bike!

Just go A1, either across to Bramham on the 64, or A59, depending where in York you're leaving from.

If you're to the North of York (Skelton / Easingwold etc) then A19, A689 past Sedgefield and onto the A1 that way.

Either way it's not much difference.
