I would never knowingly buy one, they get ragged big time.

No! The people who have driven these cars could care less about them. Yes they will have (maybe) been maintained regularly but would prefer someones pride and joy to a car that will have been thrashed and abused.

There is usually a reason something is cheap ..............

I'm not sure how the prices compare but I'd rather buy one from Hertz direct than a main dealer who claims it's an "ex management car, one careful owner sir"

Haven't read through all the blurb as my wifi is excruitiatingly slow today, but if you get 10 days to try the car without having to buy it, what's not to like?

Most of the "approved used" cars have at some point being a hire car despite what the dealers may claim.

I'm also not convinced that all hirers rag the cars around everywhere, in fact whenver I see a rental car (tend to notice the Enterprise logo) they are generally been driven normally.

This always confuses me also the concept that everyone thrashes hire cars.

I don't as they are normally st and a domestic appliance.

I certainly never see how fast I can boil water when it is someone else's kettle

I had a hire car for 2 months recently. Didn't rag it, used it like I would if it were my own.

I bought one smile

A few years ago we went to see a Ford CMAX diesel from an official Ford dealership. It was about 15 months old with about 12k on the clock from memory, and had gone through the Ford direct system and was a clean and drove really nicely. A deal was done.

When we came to do the paperwork I was just about to fill out the V5 and noticed the first owner was Hertz and it nearly put me off. I took time to think about and decided that as the car drove really well and the price was right, and had remaining Ford warranty, the risks were low so we went with for it. 5 years later and 50k miles and it's been a really good buy.

So my advice, don't right it off if it's been a hire car.. it might be a good 'un!

Yes, the vast majority of people are st drivers so any used car has at some time either been thrashed or driven by someone who probably shouldn't (or maybe didn't) hold a licence.

Bought an ex Hertz car in december last year with 15k on it. It's now on 32k and is absolultey fine, no issues whatsoever and althought it's got a few stone chips in it now, when I first gave it a decent clean a few months after buying it, I couldn't see a single mark on it. Interior was mint aswell.

Surely you understand that someone deliberately destroying a hire car is not representative of a 99.999% of hire car users. As others have pointed out, ever wonder where all those 2 year old Corsa, 500, Fiesta, Astra and Focuses on dealer forecourts come from?

OP, I'd have no problem buying a hire car, especially if I get to drive it for several days and swap it for another if I'm not 100% happy. In fact, play it right and this seems like a good way of ensuring you get a decent car. Not a option you would have with a dealer supplied ex-lease 80K miler with full history if it develops a problem after 5 days.

Yes.

I used to hire alot through work if I needed to travel to meetings or our other offices around the country. Most of the time was spent cruising on the motorway and always looked after it.

You will always get ones that have been thrashed, but that could happen with any car that you buy. How do your own pride and joy was not thrashed by a previous owner?

As long as its been maintained well I dont see the issue.

Not a chance!

I would possibly buy an ex police car for the right price, but I wouldn't touch a hire car.

What a fking s!

Why deliberately kill a car. What a tosser!!

Hope they royally did him on the cost of repairs.

Granted, it's not indicative of how most of them are driven - I always drive them like I do any of my own vehicles.

I currently own an ex hire car, a 1.9 tdi Skoda. It was bought from a Skoda dealer, with full 12 month warranty, and in the 3.5 years its been registered, it had covered 24k miles! Its hardly been used.

The hire car thing did put me off but as my parents said, its hardly been used, and if it goes wring in a big way, skoda foot the bill.

I bought an ex-hire car many years ago, 2litre Sierra.

It suited my needs at the time, was reasonably priced, good condition and never let me down in the two years of ownership.

Would I buy one now ? Unlikely.

The amount of people who claim they would never buy a hire car should check their documents. A sizable amount of main dealer 1-2 year old approved stock are just that - ex hire cars.

I bought an ex-Hertz focus and it was fine for the 3 years I owned it with only a few niggles common in all focus's. It was backed up with Ford's all singing and dancing warranty and it was a bit cheaper than equivalent 'one careful owner' cars.

People who rag and damage hire cars are morons and thankfully in the minority as most people are fearful of losing their excess and don't think it's right to damage other people's property and also view a hire car as a tool to be used and nothing more.
