I've just bought a cheap Mondeo runaround car to keep me going for 6 months or so. The car has a private plate on which doesn't particularly mean anything to me but it must be worth a few hundred quid to somebody!

If I want to sell it, do I firstly have to put it on retention or can I advertise it and still have it on the car. I don't really want to pay the retention fee if it doesn't sell! Also can any recommend me a place to sell it?

It will cost you £105 to put it on retention. Also bear in mind that your insurance company may charge an admin fee to change the reg on their systems.

If you want to sell then try ebay and be very clear that the reg is still on the car and that £105 assignment and retention fees will be added to the final value of the auction and the process will take 2-3 weeks and that you will require this £105 as deposit before the transfer process begins.

I'm in the same camp currently. I bought my car a year ago with a private reg already on it. Been lazy to sell it on and put my own private reg until now that i have to cause my own reg is going to expire on retention soon. I got a quote from regtransfers but i wasn't too sure how they work about selling it on, and whether i'd be bound to wait them to sell it for me. so instead of using them, i advertised it on ebay. No bids yet but still 2 days to go. Ebay provide options to state that the plate is on the car and the buyer would need to pay for any transfer/retention fees. Likewise with specialist sites.

Its always best to sell plates that are on retention. To sell, use the likes of Ebay (best offer option is useful as this gets negotiating going), Gumtree perhaps. Specialist sites I would avoid, they will tell you its worth more than it actually is, rarely effective when trying to sell something.

Why not edit your posts to include the plates you are selling, to give everyone a better idea, you never know wink

What's the plate? May be of interest to someone on here?

It's only £80 to transfer it direct to another car.

I would just make the sale advert clear that it is on a car and any transfer fees are payable on top.

Will do, thanks for all the advice. In terms of giving me an age related plate in replacement, do I have to pay for that as well or is one automatically allocated?

One will be automatically allocated (usually the original plate that came with the car).
