I'm thinking zafira or similar with a small petrol engine as most of the trips will be short sub 10 mile hops with the ocational long run.

what goes wrong on the older 1.6 and 1.8 petrol zafiras ?

Other than they are vomit inducing?

All the negatives of a 7 seater, with none of the pluses

My sister has had a 1.6 petrol Zafira for a while, seems to be reasonably reliable. Stuff that has gone wrong is down to neglect more than anything... seems to sup the oil relatively happily, but again might be down to hard use! She isn't forgiving on cars!
I imagine it would be fine with normal use, a little sluggish but to be expected!

I've just got a Qashqai+2 with the 1.5dci engine - I really can't fault it!

We've a 128k mile 1.8 Zafira. Costs us very little. Only real problem we've had was the MAF sensor.

Usable rear row of seats (but obviously no boot space when in use).

It's now the dog car:

No question S Max it is superb.

You could even pick up a 2.5T Fpcus ST powered version smile.

To make it a 7 seater you lose the entire boot, seems to be the case with most of the competition too.

1.6 is underpowered.

Other than that they're a cheap way to cart half a football team (plus subs) about

Needs to be cheap as chips to run, speed and power are not required, I know the 1.6 is gonna be gutless.

They have 4 kids ( twin boys were born 5 months ago ) so it has to be a 7 seater.

maybe going to look at some at a Vaux dealer tomorrow sub £200 a month over 5 years with very little deposit seems to be achievable.

I'm steering them towards a petrol one as 90% of the journeys will be short 2-5 mile 30mph max hops which I suspect would gum up a modern derv ( feel free to enlighten me if I wrong on this)

If there is anything else out there that can do the same.

7 seats

1.6 - 2.0 petrol sub £200 a month please post me links as I wasn't to give them other options

Mazda5 all the way.

Not too huge, and its an actual driver's car.

Also cheaper than an S-Max.

Are you ignoring the S-Max and strictly going to choose a VX option as per above post and original post?

As there are 2 adults and 4 kids why not look at a 6 seater?
There is the Honda FRV and the Fiat Multipla. Both have six proper seats that do not need folded down to give a full sized boot. They both do not have a huge footprint either.

I picked up a LWB Shogun earlier this year for pennies.

Seats 7, and goes anywhere.

Fuel consumption could be better.

I can vouch for the FRV, does the job it asked, just not an exciting drive.

Our 1.8 petrol Grand Picasso, has been faultless in the 2 years we've had it, and is now 5 years old. Very nice comfy car to drive too, and handles the family duties perfectly.

MPG wise, usually get low 30s for urban journeys and high 30s for motorway trips. It is possible to get low 40s if you cruise at 60mph or less.
