Audi Nanuk Quattro Concept: Frankfurt 2013

Well, after Goodwood the Parcour concept needed a new front end anyway

At the time of writing - namely just after the VW group preview evening - Audi still hadn't shown its Sport Quattro Concept but, alongside the new A3 Cabriolet, it has revealed a surprise.

"A true masterpiece" says Audi's boss
"A true masterpiece" says Audi's boss
And if you were wondering what had happened to the Italdesign Parcour concept after its off piste excursion at the Goodwood Festival of Speed the answer is it's gained an Audi top'n'tail and is now the Audi Nanuk Quattro Concept.

Which is to say a V10 diesel-powered supercar crossover thing with 544hp, a round 1,000Nm (737lb ft in old money) of torque and capable of 0-62 in 3.8 seconds. Directly into the nearest stack of bales. Or perhaps not, Audi boss Rupert Stadler confirming it's now got four-wheel steering too.

Why you'd want a supercar with raised ride height and questionable ability to go round corners doesn't seem to have troubled Audi, saying of the concept "its crossover concept combines the dynamics of a high-performance sports car with Audi's Quattro expertise on the road, on the race track and also off-road."

Given the awful state of Britain's roads at the moment (lord knows what they'll look like after this coming winter) a supercar with jacked up suspension doesn't sound like such a daft idea.

Interesting. Actually quite like that. And yes agree, with the state of the roads over here as well it actually makes sense - jacked up supercar.

That genuinely looks like a Matchbox car - down to the crass detailing and dodgy proportions...

They keep messing with quattro concepts, don't they? They nailed it with the 1300kg, 5 pot turbo, manual gearbox version but wimped out. Why? BMW make a three pedal M5 for the US, so it's not a fear of not selling there.

Maybe the next quattro concept will be stretched, with loads of rear seat room and a slush box for the Chinese market. They really appreciate old cars, especially game changing rally weapons from 30 years ago...

So innovation at Audi has gone from advanced aerodynamics for road cars and ahead-of-its-time aluminium architecture to LED lights, large wheels and messing about with these Quattro concepts that look like even-worse-proportioned Mitsubishi Lancers.

Still, when they were being innovative, few bought them.

Drop the ride height, lose the concept sparkly bits, and I'm pretty sure you are looking at the next R8.

So wait, Audi show a new Sport Quattro, that is absolutely nothing like what a Quattro should be. Then they show us this, which looks considerably what a new Quattro should be, and they call it something else? Don't get me wrong, I think its great to see Audi making a car like this, but here's an idea Audi, put the 5 pot turbo out of the RS3/TTRS in it, slap a different badge on it, lets call it something like, hmm I don't know... Sport Quattro? Then throw that other A5 based hybrid abomination in the bin and make everybody happy smile
