I'm needing some PH ammo here to justify a new(er) car...

Now our eldest has started school, we'll be "school running" twice a day but the trip is only two miles - we would cycle but the road is lethal on bikes and it's a bit far to walk.

Our 61 plate diesel camper has already thrown an EGR valve fit (the sensor was re-set, no further issues), probably due to too many short trips.

Now the other car is a so far uber reliable 335d (that can't put a wheel wrong in my wife's eyes!) but I want an M135i - would the petrol car suit such a short journey better? It's also smaller so I can fit up our silly narrow country lanes better... of course it would have to be a 5 door.

What's wrong with either walking or taking the bus? Two miles can be a mare in poor weather, granted, so a bus would be helpful on those occasions.

Changing a car to suit that sort of journey is tantamount to madness IMO.

Assuming the OP is in the countryside then there probably is neither a bus service or well lit pavements.
Have to agree about the madness of changing cars just because of this though smile

I clearly was a bit too vague; it's just one reason I can use as "ammo" to justify changing cars. There are many more than just the school run!!

And yes there is a bus a little way away but while he is only four, we'd rather take him for a little while.

We might walk when he is older but two miles is a good 40 minutes either way. Would rather exercise in a more fun way!

I'm doing 120 miles a day in a £300 stter, is there any car that won't be suited to a 4 mile a day run? hehe

Does the 335d have a DPF? What other types of journeys is it regularly used for? Don't think modern diesels like only being used for short runs, if that'll help you justify to the Mrs....

It sounds like you just want an 135i smile if that's the case, go for it biggrin I'm not sure there's a way to justify it other than 'want'.

Sounds ideal fodder for an electric car - a petrol one simply won't have warmed up in two miles.

There is; it's called the fellow purse string holder aka the missus!

The 335d definitely has a DPF.

I just want petrol power again!!!

Petrol will have less short term issues but still won't thank you for 4 mile round trips from cold. Depends how long you're keeping it really.

The BM does get weekly 100+ mile runs to clear any DPF much out. It's not just for short trips.

Our kids go to the village school which is less than 2miles away. From our house to the village (only about 800 yards) there is no pavement and some real dicks driving down at 60mph.. so I can absolutely see how walking is not an option with young uns.

An M135i sounds perfect for this. You can always take the long way home having dropped them off to make sure the car is looked after properly.

Just cycle?

If you're worried about safety just ride two abreast the whole way...
