Cheapest new cat PCP/Lease deal
Discussion
I currently drive a 2000 BMW 318 E46 that is on it's last legs. I have been looking for a replacement for around £2K over the last month or so and basically everything I have seen has been complete rubbish. I am sick of looking at cars described as mint which turn out to be full of filler and over spray. Because of this I have been working out if I would be better off getting a brand new car with the cheapest monthly cost rather than gambling with another shed.
I have already test driven a Skoda Citigo, but by the time I had added a few options it worked out at £124 a month with a £1000 deposit. I liked the feel of the car but it was a bit small and I am not sure about the 3 cylinder engine. Felt pretty solid and well built though.
I don't have many criteria but it must have remote central locking and electric front windows. If it had a stereo that could play MP3s from a USB stick that would be brilliant. Willing to accept recession white as metallic paint seems to really push up the monthly price. I get 34 MPG out of the BMW so I need to get 50MPG out of the new car to make this worthwhile. Road tax as cheap as possible please.
Basically I am after the cheapest to run possible brand new car. This will be used primarily for my 40 mile round trip to work every day. It will very rarely be used on the motorway.
Currently Fiat are doing a deal on The Panda Pop 1.2 for £98 a month with a £98 deposit or the Punto Pop 1.2 for £108 a month with £108 deposit. I think I would prefer the Punto purely because it is a bigger car than the Panda.
Are there any better cars/deals out there?
Just noticed I have put cat instead of car, VERY ANNOYING!

Hyundai i10 - £99 PCM, with all the things you're looking for for £1k deposit (£7,695 purchase price). I've just got rid of mine and it didn't miss a beat (drains your soul though). Put it this way, I was delighted to upgrade to an older, citroen c3 picasso.
Edit: the mid-spec version has USB, all four electric windows, air con, alloys. The two things I missed were fuel computer / temp gauge and heated mirrors. I got 47mpg from all cold running / urban crap driving. 55mg plus from petrol if you do anything better than the winter mschool runs.

Looked at the i10 and I believe the base model comes with central locking but it is not remote. Also I hate to say it but the i10 looks a little too noddy/pensioner for me. My main concern is hating the car once the novelty wears off and being stuck with it for 3/4 years!Joey Deacon said:

That happened when I saw my xc90 parked next to it as i traded it in and I survived a year after that. Very competent car, although if I ever appear on top gear and JC asks me about my car owning history I will deny all knowledge. Also, they're so anonymous. If you were a spy, they'd be the perfect car - no one takes any notice of them.
Joey, I was in a similar position and spent all last week car shopping.
We ordered a citigo sport yesterday
The skoda 0% finance and 3 years free servicing is the best deal out there imho. In fact the numbers are so good my pensioner parents who cant really afford a new car worked out they will be over 800 per year better off buying one than running their 12yr old audi.
You need to consider the 3yrs free servicing, free tax and 60mpg. Overall this makes it incredibly good buy.
We looked at Fiats, wife liked the 500 but i reckon the citigo is far better quality and will have a far better residual value. As for the 3cylinder engine, well i was very impressed, for its size i think it drives very well. We had an extended test drive including motorways driving around 75/80 with 4 adults effortlessly. Its more than capable of taking on longer journeys i think. Have a look at online reviews and on youtube, there is an interesting video of cardealermagazine driving a citygo from the factory across Europe to London in 4 days without complaint including a spell on the autobahn cruising at 100
Worth another look imo, but then again if you dont like it fair enough.

Should have said, the sport has a lot more character than the normal citygo and is full of extras. Even evo give it a great review

We're 130 a month for a red sport with 1000 deposit. I could have got it to 127pm but was another 2month wait at that dealer. Hope this helps.

I am utterly, utterly sick of spending every evening looking at cars on Autotrader/eBay and then spending all weekend travelling miles to look at heaps of junk. I always ask if there is any signs of repairs/filler/overspray and I am always assured there is none. Last Passat TDi I looked at had signs of repairs on nearly every panel. 4 hours of sitting on the M25 on a saturday and I could have punched the seller in the mouth. The idea of just paying £99 a month for a brand new car seems a no brainer compared to all this hassle. We ordered a citigo sport yesterday

I really, really wanted to like the Citigo and I read/watched every thing I could find about the car before I looked at it. I really like the build quality and the fact it is so easy to drive. I also really liked the fact that it comes with air conditioning as standard. Only downside is it seems a lot for such a small car and the back seats seem a bit useless really.
The problem I have is that I seem to go round and round in circles as follows :
1)Get a brand new car for £99 a month, perfect.
2)Over 3 years thats going to be £5K (in the case of the citigo)
3)hmmm for £5K I could probably get a nice second hand car.
4)If I buy something for £5K and it goes wrong I will need to fix it, maybe I should spend less.
5)Everything for £2K is a heap of junk.
6)It will probably be cheaper in the long run to get one of these new cars for £99 a month.
7)Goto 1
Joey, surprised you think the back seat is useless, fiat 500 rear seat is useless! I'm 6ft and can comfortably sit behind my wife driving and my 5' 8 daughter can sit behind me. I reckon it must be one of the roomiest small cars.
Ours will mainly be used by wife & daughter but me at times. Tbh i'm not sure I would have been totally happy with a normal version but the sport is an absolute hoot to drive. It kinda reminds me of an old school 80s hot hatch to drive, point & squirt.
Could you try a sport version?

OP....
For 2 grand you should be able to get something quite respectable, ok it might have a few blemishes and some miles, but that has never put me off....
Regards leasing/PCP have a look at Toyota, they will be a little more expensive but free insurance in yr 1 and 0% APR so you will actually own it at the end.
I must say however that i have been in the same situation as you (old audi a4 that couldn't cope with the miles) so i got a new Aygo...now i like small cars and i put 10k on it in 7 months, BUT, my god was it awful on a long run, great fun for thrashing about in, but i chopped it in for a yaris SR on the first service on a whim. that was better but i still was left significantly lacking and ended up getting another old A4 (7 years old 90k miles, but otherwise good for £3k) ran that for 100k miles and it hardly missed a beat.
Personally i would be looking for something a little older and steering clear of finance unless you can get 0%.
personal experience of current little cars, VW Up, great motor but a bit wheezy on the M-way, Hyundai I10/kia picanto, plasticity rattly crap and the dealers are idiots, Aygo well built little car, Ka too small, fiesta, great steering and sublime ride quality but a bit wheezy in 1.25 spec, corsa....dislike cant say why just don't like them.

I cant comment on the finance, but an Aygo/C1/107 are fantastic little cars. The other halfs sister has a 2006 Aygo and its just clicked over 126k. Its abused, not looked after, she even didn't get it serviced for 40k miles and gave her no trouble. Just passed its MOT and just needed a new tyre, and some rear shoes which is not bad.
Sits happily on the motorway no trouble at all. Does pick up runs from the airport and can take 2 passengers and 2 big suitcases no problem. They will never be quick from a standing start, but once you wind them up they are good fun.

Just to add: if things go well, I'm fairly certain that any of the cars mentioned on this thread so far have enough bonnet space to fit two turbicharged hayabusa engines in them - 700hp/ton sleeper is only a few £k away.
