So for the last 3-and-a-bit years my Z4M roadster has been doing the 60-mile round trip commute, 5 days a week (yes i have worked out how much i've spent on V-Power, and yes it is a lot). She's up at 63,000 miles now and i have a few quid stashed away

I'm considering various options now, one is changing the Z for a 997 of some description (probably an early gen 2) and piling zillions of miles on it.... the second option is buying a third car (a cheapish diesel hack that does 60mpg) for the commute, extending my garage and turning the Z into a beast (supercharger, brakes, suspension upgrades, exhaust, 500bhp etc).... third option is to buy a Cobra recreation (i've always wanted one) with a ludicrous great v8 in it for fun (alongside aforementioned diesel hack)

of the 3 options, what would you do, and why?

If you feel you can potter on your commute in a diesel shed without tearing your hear out then I'd go for that and a Cobra (or, just for an alternative, a Caterham). smile

I hesitate a little, but denying the state several thousand pounds a year in tax would make it tolerable i think

Z stays for those summer drives home, Cobra for the weekend.

If I had a diesel box to commute, I'd probably just take it easy and not get stressed at traffic etc, chuck a CD on. Having a fast commuter means I want to just get the driving done.

I can't keep the Z and get a cobra - i don't have the space. It's
- 997, or
- bigger garage + diesel box + cobra, or
- bigger garage + diesel box + modified Z

You've got to this stage as well. The Z4M is very difficult to replace.

If that's what you've always wanted, that is what you should do.

diesel and cobra

I would worry that seriously modifying the Z would cause issues later down the line with reliability/value

I vote the modded Z. Then in time to come, chop it in for a Cobra rep.
