Why such a price difference on different size tyre?
Discussion
Wanting some 17" winter tyres for my Polo and the cost for a good tyre is roughly £100+
Comparing this to people spending about this for 4 tyres on the winter tyre thread!
This question also clearly applies to all other tyres- the cost to manufacture different sizes surely is roughly the same?

Is it not just to do with how many they run in certain sizes, for example a tyre company will make a lot more 225/45/18 tyres than they will a 235/45/18 so you'll have to pay a premium for the less produced tyre.
A much better example is 225/45/18 (fairly rare, only really on some BMWs / MGs / Saabs) is around £110-£120 a corner.225/40/18 (slightly smaller sidewall) is £70 a corner - because it's one of the most popular 18" tyre sizes (inc most 18" Golfs for example).
Economies of scale.
As an aside. Rather than playing guessing games with various tyre websites, does anyone know the cheapest, high rated, 4x4 size?
The reason I ask is that I'm going to be fitting new wheels to a Rangie Classic. They will be at least 17" in order to accept larger brakes than the standard Classic.
I don't want to go much wider than 200 but having had one Classic that ran on Avon TurboSpeeds costing nearly £2k for 5 I am keen to select the most common wheel size in that sector so as to not get nailed on tyres.

I think the mark up on anything roughly 17in and over must be significant. 14in tyres for the Aygo are between £25 and £50. The OE continental's can be had for under £40 a corner. I can't believe it costs 3x as much to make the 17 or 18 in version.
But think about all those third world s
t heaps needing tyres and you can see that globally the demand for the smaller sizes must be magnitudes bigger than the larger sizes?sat1983 said:
Still don't get it. Whatever's needed to 'build' a 17" tyres cannot cost 3x as much as producing a 14" tyre.
We're talking tyres here- not some rare object!
It's all about volumes. You need a higher margin on the lower volume product. We're talking tyres here- not some rare object!
They aren't going to cost much more to make but you are going to sell fewer of them.
How many 14" wheels do you suspect there are on the planet in contrast to 17"?
And then add to that the fact that you can also add a premium as someone with 17" wheels has more money.

A 14" tyre will have a lower speed rating and be made of cheaper materials as a result. It needs bigger tools to make it, and does use a chunk more materials as it is wider as well, and economies of scale make a big difference to production costs. We're talking tyres here- not some rare object!
