Just off to take my 5 year old boy to his first karting experience at Daytona Manchester. After last weeks thread about when we all got into cars im hoping this will stick in his memory although he's already obsessed.

They do three modules teaching the little ones how to get round the track and I can't wait to see his face..

No doubt some of you have been but I will share the experience later.

My son is booked for his first Bambino session next Saturday - he is obsessed with anything that moves and already has a 36volt quad bike that e throws around quite amazingly well

Nice to see karting being opened up to under 8's and at sensible prices

Thought you had to be 8 to drive a kart at Daytona?

How expensive is it to get your kid properly into racing? What's the youngest age for them to enter proper races at?

Is there some form of progression from karts to single sweaters etc? And have you already got that mapped out?!

My boy loved it!! Unfortunately Manchester City were playing some Queens I think at 12.45 so we only just made our 12.30 arrival time... (its 200yds from Old Trafford Park).

Daytona do 3 Modules called Bambino for the 5-7 year olds. They get a certificate after each one (assuming they pass)and after doing all three they get some kind of bambino license and some karting clubs run Bambino races.

We are going for the 2nd Module this Saturday at 12.30. In Module 1 they were taught accelerator, brake and had to go round a fairly twisty track. They were also taught about the blue flag faster karts behind to pass.

My little boy is quiet small and only reached 5 in August and he was the smallest there by some margin. There was only 4 in each time slot.

Overall, the staff were brilliant, my boy loved it and the track and facilities were excellent.

Worthwhile definitely.

No plan whatsoever, just some fun for him at the moment. I coach rugby on Sunday morning for 3-6 year olds and he does this too and I have no dreams of him becoming another Johny Wilkinson. I guess its just a case of providing whatever opportunities you can to see what he gets interested in..

Having said that, I imagine I would have to give up an awful lot were he to choose racing as a possible career... I wonder if Haymarket would sponsor...

Awesome. Will keep this in mind for my lad. He's just turned 3 and we drive my sheddy Avensis up and down the drive - i do pedals, he does steering and puts it into 1st/reverse. Loves it. smile

Well, an update on Bambino modules at Daytona Manchester.

I have to say the guys there have been utterly brilliant. Toby passed Module 1 and 2 and done the Novice all on the outside track. He wa stold two weeks ago that he could progress to the Intermediate which means the indoor track with the bridge in the middle.

My only problem is that its getting to be a pain driving nearly two hours to Manchester for a 20-30 minute session. I dont want the travel and the shoirt amount of time on track to wear away his enthusiasm.

Trouble is, where, near my place (small village between Chesterfield and Worksop), does karting for 5 year olds? It seems everywhere else is 8+. Any suggestions appreciated. I have emailed the National Karting Assoc too.

Anyone with a son remotely interested take them to one of these sessions. They really look after them and make it fun.

Things get very expensive very quickly! If you're considering it for your son then look into it first before he gets hooked! My figures are a bit old, but a season in current production Formula Ford, the lowest rung on the ladder of single seaters, starts at around £80k - £120k if you want to be competitive (testing, fresh tyres etc), FRenault about double that (although FPA, regarded at a similar level is only about £90k last time I heard). Club level single seaters, which are much cheaper, start at about £1000 per outing (race, test etc) for a fairly uncompetitive car, rising to around £2000 to £3000 for a competitive car; so for a full season about £10k to £30k, but obviously you need to add your own fuel to get to the track, accommodation etc. I'm not sure about karting costs, as I didn't take that route. HTH.

I think its one step at a time. Hes only five and we have a mini quad at home so he likes petrol! I'm certainly not thinking of a career for him. I also help coach rugby for cubs at chesterfield panthers on a Sunday morning too and he loves that too!
