Hi,

Currently planning a trip from Australia to the ireland overland, plan on taking my 4.2 (td42 engine) patrol ute, however after all the headaches of shipping etc and the cost of shipping back to Australia I would like to sell it over there ad re coup some money. I realise it won't be as worth as much over there, however would there still be a niche market.

I will import it into Ireland and register it on Irish plates so this should make uk registration a formality.

Specs will be as as follows
2001 4.2 factory turbo Nissan patrol, coil cab leaf rear
Approx 300,000km realize this in the view of people at home is high however people here view this as only run in for a td42 they generally get re built around 800,000 (look them up absolutely un breakable)
Arb bullbar may have to be removed back there
Arb brush bars
Long range tank 150litre
2 way radio in overhead console
External atenna on bullbar for iPhone and iPhone cradle
Cd player
2 " inch suspension lift
285x75x16 Mickey Thompson ttc claws with 2no spares
Led 40"lighbar on headboard
Suspension Bucket seats
Work lights
2 x light force 240 hid spotlights
50litre Waco fridge
Dual battery system
Roof top tent
Arb air locker
30litre water tank
Hot water shower system
Removal box on back for the trip with roof top tent mounted on top
Serviced every 10,000km, oil and filters evey 5,000km

Would look for 9k with all the extras, box, tent and fridge

6k after removing the tent fridge, lights and iPhone kit

Don't know if 4.2 patrols have the reputation in the uk they have here, but here they are known as the toughest 4wd you can buy (zd30 patrol are rubbish) along with 70 series cruisers you can buy, landrover are looked at as scrap in comparison

Obviously a trip like this budget is vital, anyone give me any advice on the likely market for it? The value of it in the uk has a big bearing as if it's worth nothing I would sell it here and take something cheaper.

Thanks

Thanks guys

That's a tricky thing to value - there's very little that I can find of a similar spec here. It's probably worth hitting the UK greenlaning forums to gauge interest, but generally a well-prepped offroader shouldn't be too hard to sell.

Probably worth looking into the cost of having it shipped back home again - presumably it'll fit into a container?

Honestly (having struggled to sell an expedition prepared Defender in the UK) I'd expect to ship it home. It's an unusual car that's been modified to suit a miniscule market. That aside Ireland only has a population of 3 million or so, so I suspect your best bet would be to sell it to an Australian in London who wants to drive it home.

ETA I'd ask on the HUBB, as you might get someone interested before you even leave.

1,800 Euros for 12 months road tax?

I think it'll be a problem to sell.

Body on the tray for the tent a$3500
Hannibal roof top tent and awning best money can buy $1800
Waeco 50litre fridge a$1500
Bury iPhone cradle $400
External 6.5 dbi antenna $200
Various camping gear, cooking, chairs, pots pans, etc etc etc $500
Led light bar 500
Light force 240 hid $750

Total $8500-9000, all less than 6 months old current exchange rate = Gbp 5300 approx probably more if you had to actually source in the uk.

Not too worried if I have to keep this stuff tho.

You'd be surprised how much all that stuff costs

The roof tent and fridge are both much cheaper new here, and IIRC selling ours on ebay we only got about 50% of the new price.

Edit as I checked prices of the tent - they've gone up!

I see there sometime are wanted add for a 70 series landcruiser utes, I seen one before for sale in the uk made 11k or something maybe there is a niche market

No problem, but I think you need to re-evaluate what well-used kit is worth smile If we'd have had any likely use for ours we'd have kept it.

I'd be wary of irish import duty and car tax, coupled with the smaller market I would say UK selling would be far easier. (easier being relative for such a vehicle)

if you've owned a car for a while (I think 18 months, but could be very wrong) you can import it to Ireland without paying the import tax (from europe anyway, maybe Aus is treated differently)
Car prices are much higher in Ireland because of this tax, so you may well get a good deal selling it there

Nothing useful to add other than ask whether the Lightforce spots are worth the money; as in are they eight times better than a pair of Wipacs being eight times the price?

Ya they are them wipacs would be like candle in comparison with the his 240 the road is bright for 1km ahead amazing light main advantage is that they will take the abuse on corrugated roads wipacs or similar would probably break or have to be re focused all the time

They are a seious light to be far hence not bothered of I have to keep them

I can import to ireland import duty free as a result if owning overseas, once on Irish plates I believe it's a minimal cost to register in uk

Thanks guys

To you the vehicle is all the things you've said, with known history, happy memories, sentiment, etc.

To an Irishman it's a 12 year old 200,000 mile vehicle heavily modified for a totally different environment to the one in which it will be used (climate, distances, terrain) with a stupidly high annual vehicle tax.

It's a very niche market & presumably you won't have endless time to make the sale.

Good luck, but I see you being offered very disappointing prices.
