Longest you have waited for your dream.....
Discussion
Just wondering, what is the longest period of time you have waited to save up for your dream car.
My dream car is an LP560 and I have always wanted one but thought yea i'll get one when im older etc.. but after some man maths I've calculated if I save at my current rate I can have one in about 3-4yrs. I don't think thats too bad considering I will achieve a dream! However, each day without a toy will probably feel like 10yrs, I have settled for lesser toys but have never been a day without! So I hope to be able to endure the time....any one have a similar story....please do share!

Same sort of position, been coveting a Lotus Esprit since I played 'Lotus Esprit Turbo Challange' as a kid.
Realised it was a possibility 2 years back (after another bit of man maths) but needed to buy my first house first, should be exchanging contracts this week
Will be taking out a loan for the Esrpit as soon as I'm moved in and have a bit of furniture. Worst thing about it is I just view the house as something I need to get out of the way so I can get the car.
Just out of interest just what kind of compromises are you having to make to get such a beast? For me it will probably mean compromising my life style fairly seriously; running costs + loan repayments + servicing etc will mean allot of my disposable will be disposed of!

I have owned an Esprit turbo for the last two years, Its not too bad on running. Most of the bespoke parts are going strong but alot of the mass produced parts have failed. I reckon in upkeep for the last 2 years (mine is a 1988 with less than 20k on the clock) has been approx 7-8k, maybe more as I have done a few upgrades. It might not cost Ferrari money to buy but its on par with running costs. By comparison my 911 of the same era is costing me considerably more and that was fully rebuilt a few years back, I love it and use it more frequently but due to the outlay I am going to utilise the Esprit more this year.
My Chimaera cost virtually nothing to run and use (except servicing). Last MOT after not being run for 8 months consisted of a new braking switch, two new bulbs and a screw in the drivers door mirror.

So glad we have similar views!! I'm fortunate in that I live at home with parents and don't have property on my mind any time soon lol But I too would see a house as just something I would have to get out the way to then get back into a nice car. As for compromises....I would have to have less takeaways, go out less (pubs and clubs), miss out on trips with friends to nurburgring/spa, other track days potentially. So that I can save up for the beast, and then once purchased albeit on finance, would just have to be careful with how often I drive it...Vpower won't be any cheaper in 3-4yrs time! lol

In 1991, at the age of 13, I really really wanted a Mk2 Golf gti. The yearning never went away and I eventually bought one this July.
So 22 years for me.
Likewise. Wanted a MKI convertible golf since I was a lad (24 years ago). For some reason or another I have never owned one. Went to see one last weekend and I'll be buying it once I sell my abarth 500 (hopefully this week!). So 22 years for me.
I wanted, sorely, a Integra Type R DC2 but couldn't justify the insurance cost at age 19. I therefore waited until I hit 21 and bought it. I actually bought it 2 weeks prior and stored it in my garage until the big day. God that was difficult...but at 00:01 on my birthday the hills were alive to the sound of Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.
I'll get back you when I have finally saved up for my wife's dreams.
Last one was a £21k front wall for the house.
That's paid off. Now it's something else.
My secret car fund is, after 4 years, £1020.58. So I am sort of dreaming of a Rover 420 turbo, or 600 Turbo, or perhaps a Maestro that was made in Bulgaria that has spotlights and can go offroad.
Decisions, decisions.

I don't predict this thread going well for you. Still, good luck with your dream As for compromises....I would have to have less takeaways, go out less (pubs and clubs), miss out on trips with friends to nurburgring/spa, other track days potentially. I waited until I was 24 before getting the car that I'd planned to get since seeing it on Top Gear for the first time at 17. It wasn't so much saving up as just waiting until the insurance was sensible, and then it dawning on me that I could actually go and get the car I wanted after all this time...

Sounds like my mate at work.
'Wife's decided we need a new front door.'
'How much?'
'£1200.'
'Ouch. Going to get a quote from elsewhere?'
'It's being fitted tomorrow.'
