Last month we had a week's holiday in an apartment in a town on the Cote d'Azur. In the evening we would sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by below. What surprised me from this elevated vantage point was how many cars had numerous dents in their roofs. In fact most local cars over 5 years old seemed to be afflicted in this way. Some would just have one or two dents, whereas others would be absolutely peppered with them.

Do they have mental hail storms down there, or what else would cause this phenomenon?

Hail, probably.

There is a strange little industry around hailstorms, where after a storm, insurers will contract specialist repairers to fix all the cars en masse where ordinarily you might consider them write-offs. However I guess it still affects your premium so some people decide not to claim.

Not a uniquely French thing - there was a similar spate of damage in Lincolnshire not so long ago, IIRC.

They had a hailstone shower the size of golf balls in the south/ south west of France. It caused a lot of damage to cars, especially ones with panoramic glass roofs. This was back in 2001. Apparently they had another one in the Bordeaux region earlier on this year.
