Irish Number Plates

Strange question but I have a friend with an Irish registered car with a number plate of format 99AA9999 that I would like transferring to my UK registered vehicle. It is not a private plate so was wondering if this is even possible, and if so, how?
Thanks!
In short no. In the distant past I believe you used to be able to transfer plates, but that when Ireland was on the 1903 system that Northern Ireland still uses (e.g. plates like 139 DZU which was a Dublin reg car for instance). The 99AA9999 plates were introduced in 1987 and are definitely not transferable. Thanks!

Contrary to a popular belief here in the uk, Ireland is a different country, since 1916.
26 counties of Ireland left the union in 1922, not 1916, as is popular belief in Ireland as most only have schoolboy history. Declared a republic shortly after the abdication of Edward VIII. Oh and Ireland has always been a different country, even if it was part of the union, much like Scotland and England are different countries.Edited by Mcbeth on Wednesday 18th September 13:07

Not possible I'm afraid that is a ROI plate so would not be transferable. NI plates not a problem, in fact I was in Belfast for work yesterday and you see more and more English/Welsh/Scottish format plates over there now, don't know why.
Brought over from Britain probably. We don't have the variety in used models in NI so sometimes have to buy from England, Scotland or Wales.stu67 said:

Mostly fleet/hire cars brought over in bulk for resale. Think Hurst/Agnews.stu67 said:

In theory you are 100% correct but every so often an Irish issued plate crops up in the UK. Some of these are really old nos which could have been taken to the UK pre partition in 1922. However the plate VIP 1 was an ROI plate issued in 1979, ant that plate is now on a UK car??ArmaghMan said:

Yup, as I said it was still possible to transfer ROI plates on the 1903 system to GB well after partition. I'm not sure when that stopped, but definitely after 1987 when the new system was introduced in ROI.Incidentally, I believe there is a rule allowing one to run an old ROI plate in NI as long as the car is kept continually taxed. Not sure of the specifics but I believe once the tax is out it has to be changed.

NI based vehicles with mainland UK format VRNs is something which has been possible for a long time, the biggest problem when PIRA and their Loyalist counterparts were being naughty boys was that a Mainland plate marked someone out as a toursit or to do with the military .... plenty of UK mainland vehicles with NI format 'dateless' plates on - fairly common i nthe Bus and coach industry to hide the age of something ( like the refurbed vehicles Arriva is using on the 'Sapphire' branded services in Leicester or where a coach has been partly or fully rebodied ) plus of course the chav personal plates much beloved of Gaz and Baz ....

For example the HRI 1 referred to on this thread. If the owner registered the car at Coleraine (DVLNI) could the plate then be transferred ?
Lived in Norn Iron for two years.
It is, more often than not, cheaper to buy a car in NW England - fly Easyjet to Liverpool and drive it back. Much wider choice of cars etc.
There is also the lease factor as well.
But EIRE plates have to stay there. If you want it on your car, you'll need to register your car IN EIRE. Enjoy paying the import tax and increased costs of motoring!!
