I've been thinking of buying a Jap banger recently and the P11 Primera (96-99) and Accord MK6 (98-02) really appeal. They are simple n/a petrol cars which handle well and just go on for ever. I know they weren't lookers, but if you wanted a swift good handling family car that wouldn't bust your wallet, they did the job really well. You can probably add the late 90s Avensis to that list too...

..So why don't the Japs churn out stuff like this any more? Honda has almost died a death in the UK (when was the last time you saw a new shape accord) and Nissan just ditched normal family hatches, went into Jukes and Quashqai's and lost its reputation for reliability. Does anyone else think its a shame and mourn the days of the clock work reliable - but bland - Japanese cars that you could just, well rely on?!

They still make them. Our Nissan Note did 80,000 miles in 3 years at a cost of only servicing and 4 headlamp bulbs.

Just swapped it for a Skoda because Nissan don't make a big car.

Because no-one was buying them. One of the main reasons nissan switched to producing cross-over style vehicles was because there just wasn't any profit left in that segment of the market, the volume was just too low to make the sums add up. Blame everyone wanting a 3-series/A4/mondeo/vectra.

I think you need to look to Korea nowadays if that is the type of car you are after. Hyundai, Kia seem to be making these cars.

The market has changed a lot since that time eg. practical hatchbacks like the Note and Jazz suit people of a certain age that tend to drive Jap saloons, SUVs, who wants a Jap saloon? Apparently they can't do interiors being one excuse.
