I really can't help but be annoyed
Discussion
I have sold a couple of cars recently, both to dealers. One of them I sold for £8,000, and its advertised at £10,000. That's fine - people have to make a living, it's about right, I wanted to sell it, no problemo.
The other car I sold for £4,000ish. I didn't really spend time valuing it, it didn't fit in my garage, and I just wanted rid of it. The dealer I sold it to has advertised it for TWELVE THOUSAND POUNDS.
I'm very angry, but not quite sure why.
Anyone ever been in this irritating yet I really shouldn't moan position?

Wow, that's quite an increase! It'll be interesting to see if the dealer actually sells said car for £12k or if it just sits on the forecourt or wherever. May I ask what car it was; year, mileage etc.
It's probably not fair to say what it was, as it probably scuppers the dealers chances of selling if prospective buyers read this...it was a 1989 car though with 70,000 miles. I should have done some homework really before I parted with it but I was having a new garage door fitted and needed to clear some space.Krikkit said:
Is this because you hadn't bothered to do a bit of work on how much the car was worth, or because the dealer is a chancing b
d?
Both. I should have properly looked into it, and also, because he really refused to budge on what he offered. A 300% markup is a bit f
d?
king cheeky really.bqf said:

king cheeky really. You could have just said "Thanks, but i think its worth more so will sit tight for a better offer".
I can see you being annoyed at yourself, but not the dealer.

Advertised is the key here, he might not get anywhere near that for it.You've said nothing about the car but maybe it's one of those that might fetch that if the right buyer comes along, he could be sitting on it for ages which you weren't prepared or able to do.
Were you happy with the £4k? Did you feel fairly negotiated with, did you get what you wanted, even if you didn't get any more than that?
If you we're happy enough with the £4k, I'd say you should congratulate yourself that you have better things to do with your time than arse about squeezing the last penny out of a deal, remind yourself you just wanted rid of the thing and let him have his profit.
But if you felt ambushed, or that you were too timid when negotiating, then give yourself a hard look in the bathroom mirror and ask yourself what you want to learn from the experience.
That slight, unresolved feeling of having been ripped off is hard to shift (I think we've all had it somewhere in our car-buying or car-selling lives) but as you already know, it gets you nowhere....

Yes I have been in the same boat a few times, albeit different stupid self inflicted costs. The other car I sold for £4,000ish. I didn't really spend time valuing it, it didn't fit in my garage, and I just wanted rid of it. The dealer I sold it to has advertised it for TWELVE THOUSAND POUNDS.

My Dad is a dealer...
his attitude is that if you are too rich / stupid / lazy to find out what it's worth then he'll bid you in the balls - it's your choice to take the offer.
Out of interest I responded to a "We Buy Any House" type Email as I'm currently selling a house for £375k they bid £256k - now THAT would be a good profit ! The fact they make such silly offers means that presumably some accept.

Do you know, I was happy enough with £4,000 (actually it was £4,250), so I should absolutely remind myself I wanted shot of it, forget about the ad that says £11,995, and just shove off and stop being a fool.
