I've budgeted that I can afford & run (unless supreme borkage arrives) a 911.

In the past I've had a R33 GTR, an S8 and a few other well depreciated, but very fun toys.

I've got an e39 touring for day to day, trips to the tip etc.

Given a budget of c £25k for purchase I've been looking at a 911 turbo(996 c 2001-2003). Given that I've passed 40, and have almost no hair a convertible seem attractive for no sensible reason at all..

I do need to be able to get a child seat in the back (Daughter is 2) though.

Does the 911turbo desire, rather than Caterfield love, mean I should hand in my man card?

The only other thought is going back for a £10k R33 - or perhaps a £15k fairly modded one, but I haven't ever scratched the 911 itch...

Thoughts? Alternatives?

I don't see why anyone who "can 911" wouldn't.

Its part of the automotive adventure,so go for it. I have been through all sorts of cars , and have had great funs with 911s, and they have unique driving characteristics that should be experienced. In the end, you will either become an addict or cure your desire. I love them!.

have had 4 911's 996 Carrera 4 ,964 turbo ,2 996 turbo's tip and manual ,the 996 turbo's are very capable all weather flying machines especially with a remap ,only criticism is they are a little clinical ,the 964 on the other hand had bags of character ,don't think you would be disappointed either way

If it was to be a daily I'd get a £25k 997, but as you have a sensible runner, then get something with a bit more character.

By the way, beware the £25k 996 Turbo. They are NOT cheap to maintain even without major borkage. Running costs to keep them in tip top condition can be pretty punishing.

993 CarreraS - looks very nice but power is a bit low.

One of the main reasons for the Turbo was 400bhp+.

The GTR I had was about 400-450 IIRC, and the power is part of the package I'd want.

Edit to add:

What would be an estimate of low/med/high annual running costs for the 996 turbo? I was guessing c£3k year maintenance?

£3k per year would be on the high side in my opinion (not including depreciation). Mid to high 20's if you choose carefuly should get you a decent 996t. Had mine 3 years now.

Thanks - any specific issues to look for?

R33 for £10k or Porsche 996T for £25k? Would seem rude not to mention these:
