Number plate, nominee change question folks

Hello all.
I have a retention document for a private plate, with another grantee's name on it. It has been signed. This I want to put on my car.
Am I right in saying I have to send the certificate off first, with a change of nominee, ie I put my details on the nominee section, send it off then it returns with me as the grantee?
It's all a little confusing
