Hi there,

I am interested in buying a used car. The one that I like the most has four different tyres brands (Pirelli, Firestone, GoodYear and other one).
They are new ones and the dealer tells me that it is fine.

Is he right?

(I know that all the tyres should be the same or, at least, by pairs for safety and mechanical reasons; but I would happy as it is for the time being).

Providing they have the legal tread depth, 4 mixed brands is totally legal.

Not advised, but legal.

There is nothing illegal about having 4 different tyre brands on a car, so long as they are all radial tyres.

Nothing wrong with it legally, and I very much doubt in reality there'd be much effect mechanically or in level of safety

I think it's ridiculous that you must inform your insurance company that you have put an after market air filter on your car, but if you replace the standard quality tyres with some plastic Chinese st that's fine and they don't have to know. I can't believe they don't charge a premium for none-standard tyres.

I think the op is confusing mixing Crossplys and Radials on the same axle which is a definite No No.

Mixing radials shouldn't be a major issue but I you better running tyres in pairs.

I'm genuinely amazed that it didn't blow up, mixing tyres is that dangerous...

They're four branded tyres too, which will provide a genuine dilemma for some on here hehe

Being in the motortrade i can gaurantee that having 4 different tyre brands is NOT illegal!

It's like saying, you're not allowed different branded bulbs in your headlights! Or different branded brake pads on the front to the rear.

As long as they're above minimal tread, they're legal! Had a customer mention this to me lastnight actually as one of my E60's had different branded tyres :O

I wouldn't fancy different brake pads side-to-side, though. hehe

Will you think the same tomorrow though?
