Ok, so which one?
Discussion
Ok so mum and dad dropped a bombshell last night that they are getting a new car, it will be the main family car, the good 'weekend' car, (they have other cars which they use for work)
They are in their 50s and basically want something a little fancy, something that will turn a few heads.
So, they asked me for suggestions and i came up with these 2.
BMW 520d M Sport

Mercedes E220 Sport

Mum likes the beemer, dad likes the merc lol
So they have a bit of a dilemma here, i like both lol

A diesel reps car.
BORING
Its a replacement for the family car so needs to be practical and diesel, they want something that looks great, dont care so much about how fast it is and wont cost the earth to run.A diesel reps car.
BORING
reps car, maybe not so much, thats left to the more mainstream Insignia or Mondeos
Think you have failed on all counts.
-Both are mainstream cars
-do they really need a diesel ( whats the annual mileage?)
-why do you go for "sport" variants? Does your mum like chucking it into bends?
5 series says "lease car" and Merc 220 says "airport taxi" to me. Nice solid dependable cars but as stated before, oh so predictable and boring. Think BMW sells more 3 series and 5 series than Ford sells Mondeos, so which is more "common"?
Jag XF?

You need to sort your parents out.
This is your inheritance they are spending, make them drive around in a sub 1k Shed. In fact most sheds would be more fun than your shortlist.
Absolutely; this week's Shed of the Week would be a good alternative. This is your inheritance they are spending, make them drive around in a sub 1k Shed. In fact most sheds would be more fun than your shortlist.
OP, you probably won't get the answers you were hoping for. I'd seriously look at the Jag, that is where my money would go (if I had any).

I'd like to inherit a L Carlton! This is your inheritance they are spending, make them drive around in a sub 1k Shed. In fact most sheds would be more fun than your shortlist.

Seriously though, I don't see anything wrong with either of the suggestions made by the OP for a "parents car", other than agreeing that the annual mileage may not warrant a diesel
Whichever they get, unless they are builders or something, I see no reason why it shouldn't be used as a work car.
It's exactly what I use mine for - and what they're designed for, big wheels and bodykits aside.
I think, if the cost were similar, I'd have a BMW rather than a Mercedes, but for the criteria and assuming there's enough rear headroom particularly, a Jaguar XF would do better than either.
