Hi all. I got home tonight after a few days away from home. There's building work going on at my parent's house, where I garage my car, and the builders have put a skip on the driveway, meaning I can't put the car in the garage for possibly up to a week.

I'm curious how my insurance company would view this, as my policy states when at home, between the hours of 23:30 and 06:00 the car is to be under lock and key in the garage.

I'm sure this won't be a big issue, and will call in the morning to query it and let them know my circumstance, but was curious if anyone has came across this and asked an insurer in the past??

Cheers all.

I suppose it will only become a problem if your car is stolen or broken into whislt not in the garage.

So do you live there. I have the same sort of policy. I can leave the car un garaged over night if i am 7 miles from my home address.

No, I live a couple of hundred yards from my parents, but I don't have a garage at my house. I understand if you are away from home the rules are different, but living so close, and I do garage the car nightly, I think things could differ.

I kmow it's only a problem if the car is nicked, and chances are slim, but you never know................

Do they already know you don't have a garage at home and you leave the car overnight at your parents garage 200 yards away?

Wouldn't be surprised if they cancel your policy. Keep schtum is my advice.

I wouldn't keep schtum - if the car gets nicked in the next few days, the insurance company will want to know why it wasn't in the garage. Trust me.

On the classic policies I have, although the cars are garaged 98% of the time, we do occasionally leave them on the driveway under the car port (overnight before a show for instance), the insurers therefore list them as being driveway kept, as if they were garage kept, and stolen off the drive, there would be an issue.

If you don't tell them, I you'll probably have no theft/damage insurance for the period that it should be in the garage but isn't.

If you do tell them they will (reasonably enough) charge you money.

Yip, the car is insured as being garaged at my Parent's house, so no issues there. Too much excavation at my place to put a driveway/garage in.

Called them this morning. They said it isn't an issue and thanked me for telling them. I guess that there are folk out there that hide all sorts of info from insurers. They just asked for an estimate of how long it would be on the street and said they would make a note on file. I asked for a copy of this which they sent, so all good. I did expect a fee for admin or to adjust the policy to cover being parked on the street for a week!!

Sometimes honesty is the best policy.
