Ban on parking camera cars considered in England.
Discussion
Good idea from Eric Pickles...
These cars invariably park on double yellow lines/grass verges/middle of a busy road for lengthy periods of time, just to film people overstaying a few minutes in a bay and/or not being able to get their car into the end bay fully due to other numpties poor parking...

I don't see the problem with them...
Don't break the rules and you won't get a ticket.
It's hardly complicated to park properly... If some plank can't park between the lines or tell the time, then tough titty.
I'd far rather these than city centres looking like the bad parking thread.
As far as "a few minutes" over stay, how longs a few? 5/10/15/60?
I've had a couple of tickets recently in Oxford, 25 minutes over stay in both occasions.
My own fault... But it also means there's rarely a problem finding a space.

I'd like to see some sense applied to it. Our local parcel office boarders a town, and the road its on is hardly used. Its a loop that serves the back of a few shops, and thats it. There is plenty of space to stop and park, but the whole road is double yellows. Don't break the rules and you won't get a ticket.

Almost everyone used the road to pick up parcels, a couple of cars would be there at a time and no issues with congestion. I don't think I've ever seen another car in that road, that wasn't going to the parcel office. Any sensible person would put a couple of loading bays there for parcel pick ups. Instead they started parking a camera car 2 roads over so you couldn't see it, and fined every person (including me) for stopping there. The irony being that the camera car was sat on double yellow lines for hours every saturday morning.
I now have to drive into the main town and find a parking space, then walk back to the parcel office. Since that time I've not spent a penny in the main town. Its the only means of protest I have.
Blindly following a law because its there is not always the best answer. Especially when its just used to generate cash, not actually tackle the problem.

The problem there is not a camera van or enforcement it's the councils bad decision with choosing what areas should be no-parking.Almost everyone used the road to pick up parcels, a couple of cars would be there at a time and no issues with congestion. Having said that, they don't just shove double yellows down for a laugh, there would have been a complaint from a resident or shop owner, an accident, or something to spur them into action. There's no way they would just change the parking restrictions out of the blue.
Same for speed cameras, they dont just plonk them around randomly for a giggle, it's almost always complaints from residents or accident stats that see one being placed.
Write to your council, ask why it was changed and it it could be changed back to a 30 minute loading bay or similar.
They don't just use them for parking though. The ones in Bolton and Bury also monitor bus lanes, especialy the one on the road from Bolton into Bury. It sits at the bottom of the hill in it's own allocated parking space and if you'd seen the bus lane system on that road you'd know it's easy to clip the edge of the lane as it starts and stops and also when traffic turning right blocks the road.
Their over zealousness means that you only have to put a wheel one inch past the white line to get round a stationary vehicle turning and you've got a fine.
As soon as the time limit on that lane is over they are straight off to another one in a different part of town. This is revenue generation and not safety etc. I will be glad to see them banned.

Mind you, you could argue the same thing about speed limits. If the limits were set correctly (as in the maximum speed it's safe to drive in a decent car in perfect conditions), they could put in all the speed cameras they want to and it wouldn't matter. ILoveMondeo said:

Whilst some are placed for good reason, from experience we know a lot are placed just to collect revenue.
Risking this one going far OT now... but I thought it was common knowledge that although they do collect a fair chunk of change they cost FAR more to own and operate. As such several authorities have binned them altogether as they were loss making in the extreme.
Granted I dont work in a camera partnership thingie office... but I was absolutely convinced they would only pop up at spot where there was a known pattern of accidents, or locals moan about traffic going too fast through the village.

I'm personally happy with the way parking is enforced, and for the most part speeding too, dont be silly, do it in the wrong place/time, you wont get caught.
But at the end of the day the laws the law, you take your chances... I dont often hammer around at licence losing speeds.
Probably tempting fate.

I dont see the problem with them either. If people dont play by the rules then whats wrong with enforcing them?Don't break the rules and you won't get a ticket.

I have had these guys tailgating me like lunatics to get to a spot where they wanted to catch people... that spot was in fact a local commercial estate, B&Q etc, which is a private car park patrolled by private enforcement so that people only park there if they are using those stores... so a public camera car surely has no jurisdiction
also seen them agressively pull up behind a lady who, from what I could see, pulled into a bus stop lane (double yellows) to pick up her elderly mum / nan whatever, who was waiting in the rain for a bus that had not arrived
Is stopping momentarily on double yellows not permitted? I thought double yellows meant no parking.
There was also a local outcry because the camera car operators kept parking on double yellows, leaving the car to go to the public loos, or chip shop, etc
these cameras are a menace to law abiding citizens and an attack on civil liberties to the point where you cannot pick up an elderly relative in the rain?
the local area also has a fairly quiet high street, with old-school shops etc that depend upon local trade. People used to stop by for 2 mins, pop in, nip to cash point, drop people off, drop things off to charity shops etc etc. Thats all over. Nobody dares stop even while in the car themselves because all the camera van has to do is grab one single shot of your number plate regardless of if you are stopping, parking, getting out... so the high st is dying as is the livelihoods of those shop owners
disgusting
