BMW M Performance: Time For Tea?

Can't wait for that M4? BMW teases its performance accessories for the boggo 4 Series...

Sick of the M135i chatter? Don't worry, it goes back to BMW next week. Don't think that means the end of BMWs on PH though because we're simply swapping it for another one, also with a boosted straight-six and looks less likely to shatter mirrors or make small children cry.

Crunch! Auto stop function needs work then
Crunch! Auto stop function needs work then
Trouble is, we've not even got it yet and BMW is already dangling temptation in our faces about how it could be made better with a little teaser for the M Performance accessories. We'll at least drive our new toy round the block before getting on the phone and asking for a catalogue... Not sure about the glitzy wheels and carbon fripperies but the straight-cut exhausts look promising. And the performance kit that adds 34hp and 37lb ft to boost it to 340hp and 332lb ft sounds tempting too.

Then again, with all this talk of the new M3 and M4 there's a danger we'll greedily be looking to the next step already. Call us ungrateful but following Dan Prosser's behind the scenes look at the M3 and M4 earlier this week our appetite is whetted for the full fat 4 Series from the M guys. More on this followed later with this vid of DTM drivers Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock at the 'ring. And also news that an unfortunate test driver will be receiving a bill from Nurburgring GmbH for a length of Armco after breaching the apparently formidable limits of the new M. Perhaps Spengler's right about the tyre sidewalls being a bit too soft after all?

I do like a M performance part or two, but not sure about all that!

It's a great looking car, but I do feel that manufactures have begun to clutch at straws when trying to make ever more aggressive/'sporting' looking models. The bumper is far too fussy for me - I love the rest, though.

Can't wait to see this pitted against lots of random lesser powered cars and then be shocked that it's faster them.

Maybe you can put it up against a a5 2.0tdi fwd and shock me when the BMW drifts better.

Maybe even hunt out that new Kia proceed and then really dazzle when it's a coupe too, but not as fun to drive.

Really can't wait for these imaginative tests

Surely the differential will grab the headlines? I'm estimating £2.5k for the diff and fitting.

I've always thought the BMW M Performance accessories looked reasonably tactful.

Like when top gear put the previous model up against the Audi rs4 and merc c63 amg?!.....

If your memories a little 'vague' have little look around for the video and see what the results where.

Now fk off back to school.

Not even one page and the children are at it. Think the car looks good but I am getting increasingly concerned about the diesels. The new 335d does 0-60 and 0-100 so rediculously quick that I almost see no reason for an M. Unless they make the M a real M, as in stripped out racer for the road.

What was wrong with Top Gear putting the previous model up against the C63 and the RS4, I'm assuming your talking about the E9X M3, the rs4 and C63 were its rivals at the time.....

It's a good point and one worth debating. Why spend all that extra money on an M4 or an RS6 when the diesel brethren are so well endowed? In terms of everyday transport it just doesn't seem to stack up for me anymore but willing to be convinced otherwise.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the look of the 4 series tested in Autocar (and so were they to an extent). I was hoping for the new model to look like a proper sporting coupe next to the 3 series rather than a 2-door saloon. This one is much more the thing.

Buy a Caterham if that is how you feel, as I'd hazard a guess that most people who buy the forth coming M3/M4 enjoy comforts such as leather, climate control and keeping their ear drums intact.

No disrespect to the 7, there.

I suppose it all depends on what you need from a car, if a motorway wafter is what you want, or just an average car for bumming around in then I'm sure that BMW's (excellent) diesel models will do fine - but some people want more than that, maybe it's simply for the bragging rights, maybe it's because they want to know that in the perfect moment, when all is right and the perfect road and space presents its self then they can go barmy in a way the boggo diesel won't allow.

Or maybe they just have a reasonable amount of cash to spend on a car and the M3/M4 fits the bill, plenty of folk will feel that way, regardless of what others think is sensible - I'm tempted to count myself one of them, depending on how it drives, I have a daily driver now and a weekend car, neither are anything overly special, but if this thing goes as good as it sounds then gimme gimme, in yellow - lol! (watch how fast that depreciates).
