Realistic discount on used car
Discussion
We are going to a franchised dealer in the morning to have a look at a few golfs priced around £10,000.
We have our own finance in place and don't have a car to trade in.
I was going to go in for the kill at a 20% discount, but I know that they will prob laugh at that, but whats the most realistic price do you think I could manage.
cheers

All relative
How's the car priced against the market? If it's near the cheapest then expect minimal discount
How desirable a model / colour / mileage is it? If it's high mileage big engine petrol in a crap colour expect lots off
How long have the had it in stock? If it's just in expect minimal movement
If they give you near 20% then it most be grossly overpriced or been in stock ages!

Cars ain't selling - I went to look at a 1 owner subaru priced at £5K Drove it away for £2.4K
Just go with cash in your pocket and make a silly offer AND walk away if the slimebag[salesman] says no. plenty more for sale elsewhere
If you have no trade in then Cash becomes king, don't take any BS or lies whatsoever from a slimy salesman.

Compared to other golfs with the same spec etc.. id say they are only around £500 more expensive.
I actually waited to the new registrations came out and hoped for the price to come down but they didn't budge in price.
The £10,000 golf in the forecourt gets around £8000 - £9000 at auction so i'll brass neck
Nowt to lose, they will prob boot my arse but will let you know how I get on anyway.

And has been said previously, they'll kick you out of the showroom.Do you really, seriously think that "cash in your pocket" means you'll get a better deal? Seriously?
If you go and tell them that you need to borrow, then they will be delighted, and offer you a serious paper discount on the car, as they'll make it back again on the finance. And even if your credit rating is shlt, they'll bend over backwards to try and get credit for you.
Cash in your pocket?

Whilst I don't blame you for trying what does the auction price (with no prep or comeback) have to do with the retail price from a dealer, in your opinion?I actually waited to the new registrations came out and hoped for the price to come down but they didn't budge in price.

Well most of them send them to auction if they don't move on their forecourt. So if its good for the forecourt it a good buy.I was once at auction an googled the reg number I was interested in and it had previously been up for sale with phoenix and it got no where near their forecourt price.

Youre hoping to get a 10k Golf for 8k
i doubt theyd laugh, more likely kick you out of the showroom. Most ive ever got off a used car from a dealer was 750 and that was on a car a lot more than 10k for cash with no p/ex
Interesting experience. It wholly depends on the car

Sticker price was 7,195. Auto trader price was 6,995. I paid 6,200 for it, agreeing to take it unprepped.
There are deals to be done. Although 2k off a 10k golf is extreme, particularly if its a desirable model.

A cash sale with no trade in is the worst of all worlds.
