so, looking at 316's and 318's, they are both 1.9's. (well the year ones im looking at anyway)

so it is just simple things like a different map on the ECU for lower power, or is it different things like a different manifold and other bits?

Different years, different engines.

One thing is certain, the digits after the "3" or "5" no longer provide any useful information!

I can remember when you could tell by the single/twin pipes between the 4pot and 6pots.

Badge numbers are meaningless these days.

I thought the recent 316/318`s were the same basic engine, just a different map/ecu?
I guess I`m wrong on that one then...

It's been that way since the E3 7 Series. It was badged as a 3.3 but had an engine displacing 3188cc.

It's difficult to know with the badges on, but then on all the de-badged examples, even more so. Although, if for some absurd reason I happened to own a 316 I'd de-badge it too. Wouldn't want people to know I was driving the "budget" 3 series! hehe

thats nice!

anyway, back on topic.
I was looking at one of the more modern one's, from 2000 (i know 13 year old but still not too old)

the 316 and 318 are both 1.9 litre engines from a 2000/w reg, so thought that it might just be a different map on them.

Sorry; a rather old Jay-Z line about the difference between two range rovers, a 4.0 and a 4.6 is followed by my post (except grand not quid) smile

I was hoping someone would get it paperbag

No offence intended.
