Right, well I may be in a position to replace beloved banger in the not to distant future. Truth is unless something spectacular comes up on this thread I'm set on the first option very much. I've spent the last 2 years pining after one but come mid-winter (great!) I can get one.

However a curve ball keeps coming back round for another pass, don't ask why or how as I don't know, but it does. So my two options

Toyota MR2 post-2003 (Facelift) 1.8 vvti (In the £2500-3500 price range - leather and a/c is a plus)

--or--

Ford Fiesta ST 2.0 (Same price bracket, only real preference is 3 door as leather and air con is plentiful at this price range, may even be standard, I don't know)

So the MR2 ticks all the boxes for me, its got better MPG than my current car (helpful for man maths to tell the Mrs) lower insurance. The Fiesta is newer, would be lower mileage, comes with a chunk of extras but I have a feeling would leave me just feeling 'meh' instead of the feeling you get when you look at a 2 seater convertible.

A Fiesta St would feel much the same as your current Golf GTi. A small, lightweight, mid engined sports car will feel much better.

Get the MR2 if you don't need the practicality of the hatch. Any other decision would be wrong driving

Exactly my thinking, whilst I love my golf and the thought of a newer, better equipped version appeals greatly I'm at a stage where I can run the MR2 and I'm sure I would regret it if I didn't.
