Hi there,

I was driving home from work this evening and noticed this at the side of the road.
I had to stop and take a photograph of it because I wasn't sure what it was an have never seen one before...maybe you could help and tell me what it is?!

The front of it (the black bit) almost looks like a speaker grille?

The road is a 30mph speed limit, could this be a speed camera?

There's quite a bit of new tarmac in a trench around it.

What would be round the corner? Follow the tarmac and you might find something else, possibly for traffic monitoring.

There doesn't seem to be anything new further on, after that, the road goes round a left hand turn and then onto quite a big roundabout

Well, it if isn't going to be a bracket for a light up "your speed = xx " sign, (the trenches suggest there's going to be cables to it) then it might be some sort of traffic monitoring for something like traffic lights to go on the roundabout.

There are talks within the area of those kind of 'your speed is such and such' signs, do they actually fine and point you?

It's a road sign that hasn't had the black protective film removed.

Not one of those speakers that put out only kids and teens can hear, that's designed to stop antisocial behavior by moving them on, is it?

They just flash up a warning, no points or anything, and they seem to have an effect.

As a couple of other posters have suggested that will more than likely soon have one of the electric "your current speed is" boards that flashes up your speed when you approach it.

There's a very similar height pole a mile or so down the road from me that has one of those boards attached to it for about a fortnight at a time, 2 or 3 times during the year, before it gets removed and moved somewhere else in the County.

It's one of these

It's a sensor for detecting vehicles carrying a certain type of transponder - usually buses or emergency service vehicles.
