Sounds like the stereo is probably knackered. Worth checking the fuses though (the one in the fusefox plus the one on the back off the stereo)

If it it has partially blow and is still just about making a connection, it will work until it starts to draw more current. However it would probably switch off completely rather than just go silent

Id still bet the stereo is just broken

Have you tested the connector wiring in the car? Are the cables decent grade? How did you test the speakers in the car; at the same volume as it is now cutting out? In situ in the car, or on a bench?

Tested the wires in the car best I can cables are all standard I tested the speakers one at a time in the car tested the stereo itself in car and on bench do you think it's something to do with the +and- ?

Doubt it's anything to do with + / - on the speakers- get it wrong and it'll still work, just sound weedy. If it's only cutting out at high power, something is breaking down at high current.

When you tested the stereo out of the car, was it against the same speakers? What power source did you use?

Yes I took the speakers out of the car with the stereo and I used a 12v charger

So, if the speakers and stereo work out of the car, the problem is in the installation. Long shot, what condition is the battery in? Do you get the same problem with the engine running? What sort of power do you think you're drawing?

Suggest you test it in the car but simply taking power from the cigarette lighter rather than usual source. Then you'll know for sure.

See if it works in the car, but with the charger connected to the battery to make sure you're getting decent voltage to the stereo (and maybe leave the charger on for a few hours beforehand!)

Had the same problem with a stereo years ago - free fitting by Halfords. They managed to screw one of the inner sill trims back on, damaging the cable to a rear speaker - shorting one of the wires to ground. Worked fine at low volumes.

I would check to see if it has a true 12 volts power and 12 volts ignition feed and a good earth. A pug 206 runs canbus to the stereo and often the canbus is used as an ign feed on after market stereos and throw into the mix that french cars usually have the + 12v and 12v ign round the wrong way.
So you might find that a canbus signal is trying to power the stereo which is causing it to cut and that the stereo is constantly drawing a current.

I Might be completely wrong but its worth a checksmile
