I've owned three cars this year and all of them fantastic machines; an RX7, a BMW 840 and now an E39 M5.

I should be happy. I should be content, but everyday I spent a good hour searching ads for something new to buy. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, is there anything I can do to knock it on the head?

Frankly They are dream cars for me especially the 840 and RX-7

Concentrate on how awesome the cars you have had are, and instead of browsing the classifieds for something new to buy, invest in keeping your current motor in top shape

No, I have issues too. Today I have bought a MINI and yet am also looking at V12-powered Jaguars right now. hehe

Wonder if people has this same problem with horses before we invented the cars.

If they had any sense, yes.

There's a lot of cars out there to enjoy so if you can afford it, go for it.

I have my daily which changes every few years, my toy which never changes so I need something for fun, in the middle, that I can change regularly so I can sample other cars. It works for me.

You keep buying very competent cars but not particularly exciting ones.

Your next purchase should probably put "head" to the back bench and let "heart" decide. The sort of thing that every muggle will tell you is a mad purchase (and probably that impending doom is certain).

If you keep buying safe, sensible BMW M cars etc then you're going to continue changing them out. For as brilliant as they are in every measureable sense, they lack any emotional qualities you can get sentimental about. If someone humps your M5 up the rear at traffic lights and writes it off, you just buy another one.

From the list I can see the following missing

  • Convertible (MX-5?)
  • TVR
  • Hot hatch
  • 4x4
Shall I mention motorbikes too? smile

See this was part of the reason why I purchased the RX7(FD3S). Nearly everyone I spoke to warned of financial doom upon purchase... And apart from me spending money on making it faster, it never really happened.

In fact, most people told me the same with the E31 and the M5...

I'm half way through that list... The TVR itch has never been scratched though, nor convertible (I'm not sure if I'm too comfortable with my feminine side yet).

With that calibre of collectable cars at that age if you buy right you can get into and out of them at a minimal loss so why not?

My price level was much lower but the addiction was strong,if i hadnt bought something for circa 4 months i started to rattle and found myself on ebay bidding for the hell of it!

I suggest a Pistonheads support group!

Nothing wrong with you at all.
Real problems come when you buy something then look for something else then buy something else then look for something else then buy something else..... but forget to sell anything!!

I'm always thinking a car or two ahead. When I was a 12 year old kid, I used to spend hours reading car mags and working out what would be my first car. It's a disease and there ain't no cure! laughnuts

There's a few of us about.

I get through at least 10 cars a year and typically own 7 at a time.

I spend at least 2hrs a night trawling PH / Ebay / AT / forums for the weird and wonderful.

Hey it's better than being addicted to drink / drugs and cheaper than womanising (at least that what my wife tells me)

There is no cure.

I've had

Turbo and supercharged MX5s
Westfields
205 GTi
Golf GTi
Cosworths
Integrale
Integra R
RX7 FD
V8 RX7 FD
TVR Chim, Griff 500

However I do suspect part of it is frustration at not being able to use them at anything like their potential on the road.

Are people not wary of buying your used cars if you're selling on after a few months?

Not too much, always explain that I chop and change regularly (typically after I've done a garlick and got them running 100% after buying them for too much).

Try a classic car. They're generally easier to love and harder to sell.

Having said that I'm looking to sell my Mini for a Hillman Imp. hehe
