Whatsup guys

So basically i used to drive a 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa Life 3Dr Black 2002 Plate as my first car, and then sold it when i went to university, however i have now decided to buy a new car, and will be purchasing a:

Vauxhall astra 1.4i Sxr
Petrol
50,0000 Miles
3dr
2005/2006/2007 Plate (unsure yet)

One problem i used to find with the corsa was that it was incredibly slow and took a while to accelerate, compared to some of my friends polo's and newer model corsas which had a bit of speed and acceleration.

I was just wondering if the astra would have a significant increase in power? as i do like to put my foot down every once in a while. I'm not looking for anything crazy but i would like my next car to be a bit more powerful.

Any help is appreciated guys!

The Corsa is 52 bhp. 16 seconds to 60

The Astra is 88bhp. 12.7 seconds to 60

I reckon, on paper, the Astra will be about 3.3 seconds quicker to 60

The 1.4 in the Astra will feel a little more torquey and will be less buzzy on the motorway.

I was looking for something with alot more torque, will it really only be around 3 seconds? is that even a noticeable difference? because in my old corsa it felt like a struggle to even get it up to 70

You will get the Vauxhall are ste brigade now just like the above, Ignore them, they cant understand what a normal run of the mill a-b car is.

Nothing wrong with a vauxhall, the corsa's are reliable and and cheap to repair etc.

Go for the mk4 astra or mk5 over the corsa for extra power and comfort however.

Also, power to weight ratio is what you are looking at for acceleration. The more power it has to pull a given weight will always be better.
The Corsa is approximately 58HP per ton
The Astra approximately 73HP per ton.

The Astra will definitely have a bit more "Go", and will be better on the motorway as has been mentioned.

For comparison, the Astra VXR of this age is 191HP per ton.

Yeah that's what i was hoping for, in the corsa if i put my foot down the car didn't really go anywhere unless i was in first gear, however when i'm in my mates cars they seem to pull you back into your seat a little bit in 2nd gear with a nice acceleration. That's really what i'm hoping the astra will give, and that it will run better at 70mph or even go higher than that, 0-70 felt like it took about a minute in the corsa! haha

If you want something with more torque from a smaller engine, you need to be thinking about a turbo diesel. Some of the VW products have sensational amounts of shove once they've got the turbo spinning.

The Astra will feel like a more rounded and grown up car than the Corsa and will feel a fair bit quicker. Both are perfectly good cars. You could possibly do better than an Astra, but ignore the "Vauxhall are crap" brigade. Most wouldn't know a decent car if they drove one.

If you're after that shove in the seat, a diesel is indeed the way to go. It'll be able to use more of its capability more of the time. An equivalent-ish petrol will normally ultimately be faster in something like a drag race, but would need to be worked more to get the acceleration in everyday use.

And as has been mentioned, try a couple of other similar cars (Focus, Golf?) for comparison, but they're definitely not s**t.

forgot to mention that i'm only 18 in university so trying to get the insurance costs low, that means thing like a turbo are out of the question.

What did you mean by the astra will feel more grown up but the corsa will be quicker?

Are you saying a 1.4 06 plate corsa could beat a 1.4i astra in a drag race?

Which would have a better acceleration / torque?

Oddly, my st Vauxhall lasted a couple of hundred thousand miles before being wiped out by a lorry. Paint made a break for freedom but mechanically it was still going ok.

How they're treated often is at least as relevant as badge.
