Hello

I sold my car on Tuesday and informed the insurance company that i had sold it the next day who advised me that i would need to purchase another car in the next 2 weeks for the insurance to stay valid. The next day im receiving a letter saying they are cancelling my insurance within the next 7 days and i have to return the insurance certificate back to them and they told me they will charge me £55 to cancel the policy although i have still 3 months to run and it was paid in full when i took it out.

I am still looking for a new car but it is hard when I have other committments in the way ie family and my husband is a white van driver who doesnt know much about cars so i am on my own on this and very undecisive about what i want.

However, my husband thinks that i may be able to transfer my insurance to his old ldv van sitting on the drive (used as a storage facility at the moment) it is un roadworthy as most of the parts have been sold on ebay. This would only be a temporary measure till i get a new vehicle and wondered whether it was viable or not or maybe just have to give in and pay the £55.

I have read on a post that you can ask for your insurance to become dormant but havent enquired about this yet. Also I have 5+ years no claims bonus protected and wondered if it would go against me if the insurance was cancelled? or indeed my next premium going up because of the cancellation?

I went for a test drive in a vauxhall astra 1.4 active petrol 2009 plate, 5dr today at the vauxhall garage which was nice but not sure about the price £4,999 with 48k miles on the clock? Is the price too high not knowing much about these things. They also tried to sell me gap insurance, AA cover and diamond brite insurance, which would add on another 1k, so i came away undecided that i needed to ask my husband first before i committed mysef. Im only a driver that does about 3k miles a year. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

It is you that should be cancelling your insurance, if you have nothing to insure but wouldnt most people have kept quiet until they had another car, then done the transfer?
You are allowed to transfer it to something else such as the van as youd need to insure before taxing it anyway so that may be the best option. Doubtless they'll have a transfer fee too. Whats the vehicle value?

I doubt they will transfer the insurance to a commercial vehicle.

Hi
Yes, im too honest i should have just enquired about it and not told them id sold the car! As to the value of the ldv van is probably scrap value now.
Am i right in understanding that you dont need to own the vehicle to insure it?
I have a friend who owns a couple of old Rileys in his back garden that are still registered but un-roadworthy (well the one is a rolling chassis)so that may be an option if my insurance wont transfer it to a commercial vehicle?

Isn't this another example of piss poor customer service?

Why not either, suspend it for you and then say they will work out a charge for when you get a new car and so preserve your years no claims, or just cancel it free of charge as I can imagine its more than a phone call to do and they have escaped a quarter of the time period the cover was for?

You can transfer it to anything your insurance company is happy to insure (some don't do certain types, like commercial, as you've found).

There is no need for it to be roadworthy, taxed, or registered to you, just be honest with them.

I did it a couple of years back with a bike policy.
