As the GTR can do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, which is about as quick as anything ever sold for road use, then I look in the classifieds and see many that have been tuned, do they turn in much higher performance figures, do GTR owners get the car and feel its a bit lacking ? all seems a bit vague, has anyone ever figured a tuned GTR side by side with a standard one ?

I'm sure it stems from the old r32-r34 big with tuners who do it because they can. There's videos on YouTube of 1000hp ones vs standard ones. Recall a top gear mag a few years back that had a feature on 15 or so tuned ones

I think the keenness for tuning GTRs comes partly from how easy it is, being a turbo means bhp will come easily. The other part is probably cultural, in that Japanese performance cars have always been known for being tuned and that the R35 GTR just represents a more contemporary extension of the 90s' R33/34 Skylines / 300ZX / 200SX / Supras.

GT-R's seem to be leaving the factory with more and more power as standard. However the fastest I have come across is the 7 second 1/4 mile, crazy stuff:

I guess it's similar to the reasons that such cars have always been modified- increased performance per pound. I've never driven a truly high performance car in my life, but I love watching Chris Harris hammer around in this video whilst being unable to speak.

I don't doubt the GTR is extremely fast but I do think the 0-60 time is a little misleading since my understanding is that it is with the help of launch control which distorts flexibility when on the move.

It has a curb weight of what, around 1750kg? So despite 500+bhp being pretty huge, when mated to getting on to 2 tonnes with a driver and full fuel tank etc, it's not outside the realms of 'wanting more'

For reference, a Pagani Zonda 'S' is around 1250kg and near 600bhp.

Yeah, I get that but the GTR seems so daft from the factory, it makes all the ones you listed, as standard, even modified look a bit slow, even Chris said he turned the boost down on that 750 bhp one, I quite fancy one at some point but cant get my head round where I could really use it.

Perhaps like how back in the early nineties an Impreza Turbo seemed impossibly quick with a 0 -60 time under six seconds yet, once rolling, though still quick it didnt quite live up to the headline figure and was more skin to other 200 bhp cars.

Yeah pretty much. It's worth keeping perspective. I think it's rare for anyone to think the GTR isn't extremely fast on the road but it's power to weight is good, not exceptional.

The 2.8 to sixty is the latest 2012/13 550bhp version. The original car had 479 BHP,but the appeal is for not much spend at all ( via Litchfield) you can have performance to match the latest version and the lastest gearbox software. Once you start going above 600BHP it's the law of dimishing returns (in relation to amount spent).Litchfield even do their own warranty now for those out of OEM,so there's very very few downsides to turning the wick up on the GTR.

I recently had my 2009 GTR modified to stage 1 and had the latest cars gearbox software added and it does make quite a difference. I kept the car standard for 16 months and like you say,i never really thought the car was lacking, certainly for road use but the temptation is just too much!.
I fitted a decat pipe which is a popular mod basically to make the car sound better earlier on and put the car on a dyno at a gtr dyno day and it produced 502 bhp. With the stage 1 remap (600 quid) it is now said to produce at least 580bhp and you can deffinitely feel the difference as well as it being smoother and more responsive.
For a further 300 is the gearbox update which makes the shifts particularly downshifs at low speeds much smoother but more importantly for performance the newer cars launch control which the early cars were lacking.

It is the launch conrol on the GTR more so than the power which makes it achieve the quoted acceleration times. Also the cars weight, which is often debated helps the car get perfect traction.

These are by far the most cost effective mods on a GTR and for around a grand seems a no brainer which is why most people have them done. As someone else already said, after this it starts to get much more expensive for relitively small increases in power but by then your on the slippery slope and it is difficult to stop!

Surely it's less the weight and more how it's distributed? The gearbox being over the rear axle, engine over the front.

I'd love something with the performance of a GTR. The R34 in Bayside Blue will always be part of my 'dream garage' despite holding no appeal whatsoever to other enthusiasts.
