......do I have to pay for it to fail an MOT before I can get it to a repair shop?

I know there is some welding to be done, but do I have to have a fail sheet before I can drive it to see my welder friend? It is currently insured but without MOT and therefore tax.

Legally, you should have it recovered to your welder friend, and then drive it to the MOT centre to a pre-booked MOT.

A fail certificate doesn't give you the right to drive on the road without an MOT.

Depends on how far it is I suppose, and whether it is worth risking.

Yeah it does, as long as its directly to a pre-arranged repair and the failure isn't labelled as dangerous.

So, OP, you'd generally need the failure sheet but I doubt anyone would believe you if you're planning on getting it fixed on a mate's driveway. If you mean getting it done at a mate's business, yeah, stick it in and get the fail sheet.

The Gov.uk doesn't mention driving to a place of repair - they say pre-booked MOT only.

You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has expired. You could be prosecuted if caught.

The only exception is if you’ve already booked an MOT and are driving your vehicle to the test centre.
But if the old Bill says it's alright, then crack on I suppose.

If you know when the repair is going to be done why not get it booked in somewhere (to fail) drive it to get repaired and then drive it back to the MOT station for a 'free re-test' (or half price) which most places do within 2 weeks.

That's not what I heard earlier: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

It must have changed then because I'm pretty certain there used to be an exemption to drive to a place of repair for work to be done to pass the MOT.

However despite a previous conversation on here, the fact that you live in Land's End and you have a mate with a garage business in John O'Groats is unlikely to get you a waiver for a round-Britain trip, notwithstanding that the rules don't specify how far you are allowed to travel.

It hasn't changed.

What is worrying is that your mate the welder wants an MOT bod to tell him what needs doing.

The fail sheet is only wanted to allow them to drive on the road legitimately (hopefully).
