...what was it called?

I think it was Pioneer anyway, they launched a nice and simple looking headunit that was devoid of too many LED lights and flashy bits.

Fancy one as part of a very minor hi-fi upgrade for the TVR you see...

If only there was a car audio section of Pistonheads that you could ask on. You should see if they'll make one.

As I've said before, I really don't want to do that. We will rank highly on Google and will attract all sorts of bass-heads. For now we'll have to live with the odd thread in here.

Honestly, it's for our own good smile

No problem, I think it's discontinued and there doesn't seem to be a replacement model that's got the same retro feel so I don't think you'll get one for less than a ton.

I think I paid £60 quid for mine off eBay a couple of months back, but apparently the cd is temperamental and it's generally a bit scuffed. No biggie as I just use the radio, though more often than not the engine and exhaust noise take precedence! smile

That's my issue. My car is loud (as those who have heard will testify) and for that I blame my Dad bringing me up on ear-splitting V8s. Loud is never loud enough.

Chatting is more like shouting on the motorway, but when I'm on my own doing an early run up to a Sunday Service I feel like some music. I need to upgrade the headunit, speakers and maybe add a small amp to get the volume I need. reducing exhaust noise isn't an option.

Have you looked at the Parrot Asteroid?

Not hugely expensive, iPod based with no CD (so very shallow for fitting if that's important) and looks pretty understated.

There have apparently been a few bugs with them, but the one in my Defender has behaved itself perfectly.

ETA - Here you go:

Best stereo I ever had that was. Wish I had kept hold of it but I could never be bothered trying to fit it to cars with "built in" systems, and it was a bit overkill for the Niva.

I never had a problem with the 6x9s on the rear wall of my old Chimaera.

I had one of those in the last Corrado VR I bought. I thought it was excellent, but wanted a Bluetooth unit so changed it out for an Alpine. I sold the Pioneer on ebay for around £80 a few months back. Had quite a few enquiries on it at the time.

Good suggestion, I only have two (poor) door speakers.

Oh! The first thing I would do is get some 6x9s. You won't care about an amp or anything else unless you are really into having your eyeballs shaken by sub-bass.

Once again, I'd have to heavily disagree. If you want any sort of quality to your music, removing the amp duties from the HU is always the first step. HU amps are low power (whatever the box/front says) and usually run into clipping (you need to avoid clipping at all costs if you like your speakers - it's where the smooth waveform of the sound reaches the top of the amp's range and cuts off flat - nasty to hear, quickest way to kill speakers (and the "nicer", the quicker)) a looooong way before they reach the top of the volume control.

Garlick: also have a look at Becker stereos for the retro feel.

I'd recommend a Becker, they make some really nice head units devoid of blinginess.

We have one in the Griff... been in many cars since the day I bought it - still a good looking unit. Strange how they never made a direct replacement.

DEX-P99RS is almost the modern version, but very pricy (circa £1000)

They are but were traditionally difficult to get hold of, I don't know if that has changed in recent years, or even if they're still in the market?
